Beautiful 100 year old Van Emon Elevator @ Golden Gate Hotel San Francisco CA
(8-17-2014) This was an amazing elevator! The manager said it is over 100 years old! with NationalElevator. Facebook: //www.facebook.com/dieselducy ...
I grew up in San Francisco. I remember a lot of really wonderful
elevators. City Hall had beautiful birdcage elevators finished with oak
and bronze grill-work. They were modernized in the 60s but one bank was
saved for service use. Macy's on O'Farrell Street (I used to work there)
converted to Westinghouse Selectomatics in the 50s, but the two cars on the
left end were left original with their original operator handles. Above
the first floor they have glass doors. They are used for stock movement.
At Christmas time they turn the end car back to passenger use for express
service to the Christmas shops on the 7th floor (at least they did 22 years
ago). The Health Department building on Grove Street has a beautiful old
automatic elevator with a bronze roller gate. The Hale Brothers and White
House department stores had beautiful elevators but they are gone now. The
Monadnock Building on Market Street had beautiful birdcages and windows on
the shaft which looked into the atrium. They were modernized in the 70s.
Among modern ones, the St Francis and Fairmont hotels have glass elevators
that have wonderful views.
+upanddownadventures When I lived there, the Health Department was public, anyone can walk in. The Monadnock building is an office building, but I know those were modded way back in the 70s. Uninteresting laminate boxes, no windows.
At City Hall, I think the passenger elevators have been modernized again, however, I think there are still some original service elevators today. Sadly, at Macy's in San Francisco, the elevators have since been modernized, including the manual elevators. No more glass shaft doors. The Fairmont hotel scenic elevator is turned off. I'm not sure about the elevators in the Health Department building, or the Monadnock building. Do the buildings have locked doors/security?
I think those fixtures are likely GAL. I think CJ Anderson still makes fixtures similar to what is in the elevator. Still, a very nice elevator. They have a birdcage elevator in Victor, CO but it is automatic. They left the original hand crank control in the elevator.
Nice find!
It's nice to see an old classic still running, rather than turning the
shaft into a mechanical room on each level, right Leominster Hospital?
Yeah, I was about to say, I wish we could find something like this in Rochester... Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if there is one somewhere around here, but I'll bet whatever building it's in is dead.
