+William Murray John's dad was Lt. Col. Henry John Deutschendorf who still holds three world air-speed records and who flew B-58's. He taught John to fly. So we know he had great respect for all military pilots, particularly those who've been lost. John was partly responsible for starting the "Citizens in Space" program, and was one of the finalists though he wasn't chosen. He received the NASA Public Service Medal which is almost always given to NASA engineers and designers. . . I can't even imagine how much his heart was broken that day when the Challenger disintegrated right before our eyes! So this song meant more to him than we'll ever know because these people were also his friends. And Thank You ~ for the reminder for us to always remember all of those brave souls who've been lost and made the ultimate sacrifice. May they RIP.

+William Murray, it reminds me of Nathan Hale.  He said:  "I regret that I have only one life to give to my country."  Denver captured that spirit so beautifully with this powerful ballad.  In many ways, it was his very own swan song.  He and RCA went their separate ways, and it was never the same again.

@pnf4343 The title of the song is listed before John's introduction and that is the name of the song playing during the video...I had seen this before years ago. Is there a different video that I might not have seen?

Almost 30 years on, I still get a tear in my eye from this: Saw JD perform this at Fiddler's Green, summer of '86, and no, there wasn't a dry eye to be seen! We will do this at next years High Plains JDFest!
