NASA hero saves driver in fiery crash
A crash results in a fire and a daring rescue at the NASA Championships at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Another good point was made. When should you, as a driver un-involved in
the crash, become a rescue person? Big decision to get out of the safety of
your own race car and onto a live track! Can you see that traffic has
slowed or stopped behind you? Are you in a blind or fast section of the
track? Is another driver burning or inhaling smoke? I would consider the
variables and act. Another idea: use your own car to push the burning car
off the POOL of burning gas and away from the cloud of smoke.
Sorry... but the 944 should never have come to an abrupt stop on the race
track when the transmission let go. He didn't coast and pull over, but
abruptly came to a stop on the race line on the race track (you can see it
from the ChaseCam Gforce over lay that he clearly hit the brakes and
stopped on the track). That set him up to get smacked. Which is exactly
what happened. Never stop on the race line. It's He could have pulled off
the track. And putting the harness on backwards? Really?
Tim, There is also a requirement that a kill switch be accessible to the
driver. Reachable on the interior of the car while strapped in. Jim Panik,
driver, did not activate it. He made so many mistakes it is astonishing
(buckle upside down, stop on fast section of track, not pull his kill
switch) Very poor judgement and dangerous driver. I agree that a kill
switch is best on drivers side exterior because that is normally the first
place help is going to show up in a crash.
I'm not sure why the 944 driver stopped on a live track? Sometimes when the
ring and pinion goes, you can't drive. Same with a separated axle. Looks
like the 944 didn't have a stock rear bumper, which very likely would have
minimized the intrusion of the BMW and kept the stock gas tank from
rupturing. I'm not assigning blame, but when really bad things happen, it's
usually because MULTIPLE things were wrong. Use this video to teach others.
I'm going to!
Heat of the moment decision making will always be suspect regardless of the
individual involved; Monday morning QB is the easiest job ever. It took
about 3-4 seconds between the 944 becoming a danger on track and impact. It
seems that the BMW was shuffled out of traffic and the 944 just “jumped” in
front of him. The 944 driver may have been late to Pre-Grid and did up his
belts in a rush.
I watched the video again. WHY was the kill switch on the passenger side of
the car? FIRST thing corner workers will do is kill the power. If you're on
fire, do you want them to have to go around to the passenger side, THEN
back to the driver's side to get your flaming butt out of the car? Kill
switch activation should go on the driver's side and must be well marked.
I'm wondering if the rules shouldn't make small extinguisher be required in
each car and that drivers receive some training with them them since they
are the first on the scene within the first critical moments--I have pulled
mine twice in many years, and discharged it once...to me being a so-called
hero is not an option, its an honorable duty.
Like don't park the race car on the track. Somebody may not be able to get
around it. It could burn you. Buckle on backwards??? Really? Better start
checking 'em a little better before you send them on track, NASA. Just a
thought. Training, training, training.
Poop happens and we need to be prepared. Wear the appropriate (not just
required) safety gear correctly, use the appropriate safety equipment and
ensure it is ready to work (PULL FIRE BOTTLE PINS), practice, practice,
practice egress in several scenarios.
Jim did a heroic thing. He is a great guy and has always looked after his
racers in NASA-SE. Proud to say I know him!
