I appreciate that Seth is providing financial support. Unfortunately our
fans provide little financial support. We are at or on the bottom of C-USA
athletic budgets. During the Rice bowl game the announcers mentioned that
a former player donated $20 million to add something to their football
stadium. Both football and men's basketball teams were left with bare
rosters by Ellis Johnson and by Donnie Tyndall. Player depth has been a
problem with both teams. The new football coach has repaired some
relationships with high school and community college coaches, so recruiting
has improved in football. Doc Sadler might not be the answer, but I think
it is too early to judge. This year will be a challenge. Fans need to
recognize that C-USA is not as weak a conference as many people imply. We
need to understand that TV markets, not strength of teams, has dictated
many choices of teams getting into other conferences. Of course it is
interesting to see the number of former members of C-USA that suddenly
become nationally recognized as "being good", simply because they have
changed conferences. As far as Doc not being the right coach for us, I
remember when Donnie Tyndall was hired we had many fans who said he was the
wrong hire. He had a pretty good record here. Unfortunately for us he
left without leaving a lot of talented players with us. I think we need to
give Doc at least a year or two to recruit more talented players. Our
football team will have early challenges this fall, playing MS State and
Nebraska early in the season. I hope to see a lot of fans in the football
stadium this fall. In the mean time, I hope to see a lot of fans at
basketball, baseball, softball, and track events. The tennis and golf
teams will also have competitive events; I hope some of you will also
support those programs. Next fall I think you would enjoy watching our
volleyball team which was pretty good this year. Having been a faculty
member, I am pleased with the academic performance of our athletes. Hope
you have a wonderful 2015.
No Coach Monkren and his defensive coordinator are not getting SM football
back to where it was or should be. OH! so now we're going to have a
successful 2015 season-define successful. You the Athletic Department
gutted the program with the hiring of Ellis Johnson and your stupidity
meant that he was still getting paid while coaching at Auburn .. "A FORCE "
in college football again??? Most alumni would just be happy with a
winning season and not ending up in the bottom of the division in CUSA. If
the alumni are not watching these inepts will have the schools athletics in
"The Sun Belt". Did this Director of Athletics actually see the final
scores in say he Alabama or Miss. State game?? Dr. Bennett I have been told
does not give a hoot about the program so how would he know about the
"Southern Miss Spirit". I just cringed a how he referenced the UAB game.
That is one game that Monkren should have willed them to win but no let's
just roll over and give up. Six commenters gave this a thumbs up
..seriously. McGillis inherited a hemmorid of a problem. I hope that
behind closed doors that he is ripping these football and basketball (men &
womens) coaches a new rear-end. I hope it's not going to be another year
(2015) of mediocrity.
I would agree that something seems wrong with basketball. We shouldn't be
in a rebuilding phase. I will give Sadler a chance but so far I'm not
impressed. I also wonder when our ladies programs are going to have some
break out seasons?! The women coaches have way too many chances to get
their programs on top. Football has got to get back to winning. My family
and I will continue to financially support the athletics programs but it's
time to produce. Conference USA is not a strong conference and we should be
dominating. Our standard should not be this conference we must get to a
national level on competition. I will not judge McGillis because I do not
know him but if we rate our success based on this conference I would be
highly disappointed and so would many other fans. I'm very frustrated in
fact beyond measure it we will keep supporting and I hope we not only talk
up USM but we show it on the field. SMTTT
Well, I certainly don't agree with some of what these guys are saying.
Football is not back yet. I think we have the right coach, but we aren't
back yet. I know Ellis Johnson was a bust & killed our FB program, but we
should be back already. Somehow, we need to recruit some kids that want to
play & make plays. Now, basketball? I don't believe we have the right
coach. Something is wrong in that locker room. A starter & another of our
good players quit after a few weeks ? We are losing to small schools by
almost 20 pts. ?? Doc ain't the answer guys. We need to maybe put an alum
named Jason Bailey on the hiring committee. He knew when we hired Ellis it
was bad & he said the same thing on the Sadler hire. He is spot on so far.
I would get him on that committee if I were you guys. Reply back to me & I
will give you his contact info. Thanks, Wayne
