this game has proven to be much more difficult than the other well known turn-based strategies in that time...such as Homm 2 or Disciples Sacred Lands....this one was of a greater difficulty...mainly because enemies could be stronger and surprise the player...and units cannot upgrade (only get medals for better attack)...

The medals improve all their stats by 1. Aside from health, which goes up by 2 by gold medal. But yeah, the game can certainly be challenging.
