How do I get into lean burn (know that I am in it)? I just got my insight
and I cannot figure it out. I have been looking over forums and there is a
lot of chatter but nothing solid on "how to get into it and maintain it"
for maximum mpg with ultra gauge
+6uol6uol I have a first gen manual and haven't paid attention to gears I am in when "Think" I am in LB, however I have noticed you have to be sensitive to the throttle pressure like you said "it has to generally stay in the same place" with stable load (not many hills or at least not very steep or just dumps on FCD MPG). I have seen the mpg gauge chill around 70, 100, and sometimes it shoots over, however it seems mostly hit 150 range when going down grade on a hill. What do you mean the car will be slower? I wonder if what you mean is:E.g. I will be driving 55MPH and hit in 100s on the FCD. Then it seems my MPH will go slowly to 54, 53, etc. If that is lean burn, I have not held it due to increasing throttle to maintain speed limit. I fear my MPH will continue to go down 5-8+ MPH. I have not tested if it stops going down after a few MPH because it is just in LB. Does MPH stop going down after only a few MPH, due to the a/f is altered lean? Or does it continue to reduce until you increase throttle making it more rich again?
Well, this is only for the first gen Insight with the manual transmission. CVT models do not have lean burn (JDM Insights do though). Basically lean burn happens in 3-5th gear. You have to basically tap on the gas and hold it. If the mpg gauge shoots over 100mpg, you're in lean burn. Your car will be slower since the air/fuel ratio is altered
