Very nice video... But how to do this on a WD external drive on which the
Windows version of the utility (WDIdleDisable) reports "Drive Update Not
Applicable", like the WD Elements 4TB? The Load Cycle Count jumps by about
50 an hour!
Should I cut my losses and return the drive while I still can? But what to
replace it with? I'm tired wasting so much time with these dreadful drives
- Seagate first with its early failing drives, Samsung with its DOAs and
now WD with its designed obsolescence? What happened to reliability? Are
drive manufacturers colluding to produce poor drives to push people into
the cloud to be spied upon and for software giants to control them with
their forced updates?
The worst is after having spent so much time organizing more than 20 years
of data, having to transfer it to media that is DESIGNED TO FAIL is highly
distressing. I guess I'll have to copy all my data to a second hard drive
and keep that one in a sealed container under lock and key, never to be
used except in case of emergency. Goodbye backups and daily use... :-(
Anyway, thanks again for your nice video. I've been using computers since
before the birth of the PC and considering my first hard drive lasted
almost 20 years before it showed signs of failure, I am just bitterly
disappointed at the loss of of reliability, and I'm not saying anything
about dreadful software reliability and the constant chipping away of user
rights...
+JohnnyJim J Hi and thanks. I've never used the Windows version as I've found the additional drivers complicate the update procedure. I've also found issues trying to perform this over a USB connection, which is why a SATA direct connection is recommended. I don't have an Elements disk, if I did, then I'd pull the drive out of the enclosure and directly connect it to a SATA port. WARNING that is much more challenging that you think, they have a good seal most of the time and you'd need the right tools, like a spudger and some experience. I've also moved away from "enclosed" disks and gone to products that are the cradle with a SATA port for the disk and multiple bus types, like, this (which I own) @0
+hadd3rs its attached by SATA and im in the Advanced settings for Power Options right now and under the Hard Disk tab "turn off hard disk after ... Settings:Never" I put it to never but it still dissapears
+MohawkMasters hey there. Hmmm, that's not right. Is the disk attached by USB cradle or directly attached by SATA? If it's SATA, then it shouldn't drop out. Otherwise, check out the Power Options under Windows Control Panel. If it needs "scanning" then it's been ejected "uncleanly" which points to something not right.
I have changed the default settings too (8sec->8min) but when streaming
media it stutters every 8 minutes, while on default it never did. Is there
another setting required to fix stuttering in media?
Streaming over wire as it should be. Buffering on the client solved it for a part. It stutters about every 20 minutes now (up from 8) and the stutters are a bit shorter in duration. I still need to tweak the buffering so it can overcome the several stutters over a longer period. And this varies a lot depending on size. I think it realy parks the heads every 8 minutes now while it did not on default. But I do have over 200k cycles in like 900 days. Also i'm not usint wdidle but idle3-tools (wich should be wdidle for ubuntu)
Hi Jonas, I've not experienced that one before. You could try pushing that timer out the max and seeing what happens. The Idle timer works by being told that the drive is idle and its elapsed time is up, so park the read/write mechanism. By increasing that, when the drive it idle, it must wait that time before it parks. However, if you're streaming media from the drive, it isn't idle, therefore the timer shouldn't be active. Are you streaming over the wire or WiFi? WiFi is not great for streaming as WiFi is effectively musical chairs, everyone must have 1 turn on the read/write and while they're waiting they're suspended.
So if the timer is set to "Disabled" or "62.8 hours" will windows XP or &
control when the heads are Loaded/Unloaded cycled?. Should I then be able
to control the time through Windows control panel? Thanks for the video.
Hi Floyd, No, this is very low level, its in the drive firmware itself. It's a level below what Windows knows about. Effectively, think of it as a middle layer between your Operating System and the disk itself. When windows says "write" this, it goes through the drives firmware, which in turn does the mapping to disk etc etc...and other magic like reallocating sectors if they report bad. The firmware then reports things back to your OS (Windows in this case).

GTA 5 PC crash if press Q (cover Button) while leaving bank (first mission)
somebody help me..my GTA 5 always crash if i press Q (cover button) while leaving bank against the cops in first mission my rig i5 4460 34ghz gtx 760 2gb (4x2) ...
I have encountered a lot of crashes like aiming while in car, switch
character, and other things, but its ok because that happens seldom hehe,
but the worst crash is the cover button really because that happens often
all the time, anybody having the same issue of crash everytime when you
press cover button?? now I dont press the cover button besides its not an
important button hehe, even if I encounter a lot of crashes its ok because
it only happens seldom, I can still play well
+sam fisher same as you did, i never press cover button, and the game work fine, i have tried to update the last update (update v5, crack v4) crash while cover is fixed, but another crash appear, after covering i try to enter to the car, it said "TIEUP_0014_CHK_B", i downgrade again to update v3 crack v4... :-(
This is an issue related to the crack (?). Assuming you have both last
crack and update (Update 3, Crack v4) you should overwrite the crack files
keeping the Update 3. This means your GTA V folder should contain Crack v3
and Update 3
+Minh Hòa Tran +kareem jeiroudi +SmushR CZ i did it..the problem solved...but..there is the other problem, i have updated v5 crack v4..after i press the "q" button (cover)..no problems..i press it many times..but if i enter to the car..the game crash..every time i did that.. :-(
How to: Disable Intellipark on WD Green Drives using wdidle3

+Mike Perez For reference, I have an older set of Green 2TB, I forget what series, in an Akitio 2-bay external drive (hardware RAID0) and a brand new set of Green 3TB in the same enclosure. Running off USB3.0.The Older greens get 137~145 read and 125 write (60% full). The brand new greens (tested on empty) tested at 149~161 read, 135 write. The difference in speed is likely due to the location on the platters for the data. Spinning platter drives data transfer decreases as they fill up.Tested 3 times on a test PC and 3 times on the server. I actually did have a drop in speed on the new one to about 30MB/s , but it turned out that it was a bad USB3 cable and speeds are now stable and repeatable as above.A single HDD on a standard external drive bay tested at 125 read and 113 write. Which is a little disappointing to be honest. I would have expected the RAID to outperform the single drive by a higher margin. I would have guessed that the USB would be the bottleneck here, but the figures suggest otherwise. Those are some standard values on medium level equipment. You should be able to get slightly faster than this on your internal drives since SATA is still faster and more efficient than USB3.
+eschelar Ok,thanks for the advice! as soon as i receive the disk i will do both tests, set to 300 and disabled and will see which setting is the best. Regards!
+Mike Perez If you are not building a raid, I'd recommend to do what the others did and go for 300 seconds rather than completely disable, then boot up, do a speed test, then go back and /d to disable and run your speed test again. Compare the speed. Some users have been reporting speed drops on drives with intellipark disabled. Best to check for yourself. Passmark is a free drive benchmarker. Or you could just drag and drop a random 1gb file for the quick and dirty approach. The primary benefit for a Green in non-RAID is that it won't "go to sleep" all the time. On my home PC (gaming rig), I have a green and every time I go look at it, it takes ages (several seconds) to wake up. I can't be bothered to change the idle timer on that drive because I really only use it for backup similar to your uses and rarely access it, so it's fine. For my use pattern, 300ms probably would not change anything, but disabling it really wouldn't make a difference either.
+eschelar Ok thanks for your info. Me have just ordered from Amazon one 3Tb Green WD and im just want it to back the video games, movies and music mainly, thats all. But for the primary drive im using an OCZ SSD 240 Gb and i have another WD Blue for backup too.
+Mike Perez I just did a pair of 3TB EZRX's for my backup device. The RAID is now in testing. So far, zero issues. Please note that Greens are not as good as Reds for a reason other than strict data fidelity and are good for low cost backup solutions, but not recommended for main service drives. If this is your main server drive, you would be recommended to use Red's. For example, for our server, we have a main RAID0 of Blacks (also a good choice, but for RAIDs these are possibly not the best choice according to who you talk to, but Reds were not available in that size at the time I built it). That's a 4 drive RAID, which has redundancy. There are also three staggered backups on backup boxes using Greens - which are used primarily for timed archival and secondarily for redundancy. At any point, I could lose one or possibly two hard drives in the main RAID and still be OK. Or I could lose RAID on one of the backup boxes and still be fine. Additionally, I have a running archive for critical files. If you are a home user, you might wish to run a simpler system, maybe something like a pair of high density greens as your main HDD (ie a pair of 4TB greens in RAID1) and have a backup drive of either the same or a pair of old 2TB drives in RAID0. If you're a business, you would want to run Reds instead of greens for your main drives, but then you might not be able to get the sizes you need.Either way, RAID with Greens is always preferred to be for non-critical drives.
Thanks! Set timer to 300; running in Mint 17.1 for Plex; OpenVPN; VNC
Server; Minecraft Server; and some other minor stuff on a Core 2 Duo E8400
with 6GB DDR2 RAM... My current 2TB WD Green works faster than my old 500GB
WD Blue.. Probably because it was getting pretty full.. But either way;
change the timer from 3 to 300 is much better!
+Steven Good to see a Core 2 Duo in action still! I've run a few of these ranging from the 2.2GHz E4500 to the 3.3GHz E8600. Excellent CPU's with either DDR2 or DDR3 ram.
+AlphaDream I have just done this on my WD10EZRX and indeed the setting from the factory was 12 seconds. I've now changed this to 300 seconds (5 mins). Hope that helps.
I have ordered two 3tb green drives and wish to change the settings to the
300 second mark. My question is if I can leave both connected to do this or
do I have to do them each individually at separate times? Any help is
appreciated. Thanks!
+Rafael Garcia That is a very good question. Personally, I would do a single drive at a time. At least this way you know for sure that each one has been done properly.
same too me,myPC specs(i53470 3.2ghz+msi gtx970+16gb+mobo msi
z77a-gd55)after I played in memory of 9,when I play side mission the game
keeps freezing,I'm looking at tomhardware,i53470 &msi gtx970 will not be
bottleneck.BUT i found this //www.game-debate.com/MY cpu is
bottleneck'.
nope.. i'm planning to.. but everyone in the community tellin me that i5 3470 is still good bro.. i'll stick with it.. besides gta 5 tellin that i5 3470 is still powerful.. =)
+john albert policarpio Thank you for your suggestion'unfortunately it still does not working. Now after freeze game stop working.Btw'',do you still with i53470 or already get i73770.
Hi bro, the Game is just not optimized well, i know they have the new version now.. i'm not experiencing any lag at all.. please update the version and if there's a chance? please subscribe ahaha..
