I was able to do this using the Police car and another car, but I was
unable to do this since the video - sorry. Chances are they fixed the bug
or it's just really hard to do now, lol.
Random luck. Not sure, it randomly happens when I drive and hit the curb of
the sidewalk. I'm not able to do this when I can, just randomly.. but it
was fun! lol
This video is dramatic and amusing. Enjoy. But I'm posting this as a PSA for range safety when working with systems that can store serious energy in the ...
Holy mother of leverage Batman. That's a lot of bock and ropes and what a
sight of seeing that stump actually jump out of the ground. Damn fine job
sir. So what's next moving a house with a riding mower?
I have been thinking of a unpractical way to clear the base roots to the
stump, I have the idea of using a water pressure to clear enough dirt to
use a chainsaw to cut the roots. The idea did work with just a garden hose
. I clear the roots ,cut the main and pull the secondary root broken. One
point to pull with leverage I let 12 feet of the tree giving me the
advantage . I use a 4" strap and my jeep ,one small pull all it took.
eliminating the need for a grinder. I have been wandering why not to use
the tree to pull the stump.
+Joe Ruiz Photography With the punky trunk on this tree, the leverage advantage would have been significantly less -- the difference between using a thin pipe or a crowbar. But with a healthy solid trunk you are right.
Hi Tom, may I ask a question? I love the rigging and truly wish I had that
sort of gear! But let me ask a question and I hope you don't take it as
criticism of your technique as it is more a question of efficiency and
speed... When I bought my house there were several oaks I wanted gone, some
about the size of this pine. After cutting the tree down, I could literally
take the chain saw and cut up all the visible wood down to the ground (and
sometimes of course even virtually below ground level) and then just use a
large spade bit and drill and place huge deep holes in the remained wood.
The stop literally rots away in very short order and I could do that with
the chainsaw and drill in probably 5mins? Why spend all this rigging time
and then have the stump and the hole, etc etc?? I see lots of videos of
guys doing random things (4 trucks at once, come alongs, tractors, Etc) to
pull out a stump and all I am thinking is why!??? Cut it down and cut slots
into it with saw or drill holes with spade bit and it's gone!??
+Tom Hoffmann I like the way you planned the whole operation, especially placing the trailer to catch any rigging that might snap back to try to kill you.
+ufordinner I very much appreciate the courtesy embedded in your comment! Thank you. It might surprise you to learn that I AGREE AGREE AGREE! On other blogs I've said this is definitely not the most productive way to go. There are many faster alternatives to grind, saw, burn, or rot the stump away. In fact, I called this technique an "experiment" in MA rigging. BUT sometimes you simply can't tolerate the long-term sinkhole problem, under driveways, hardscaping, yard structures or even portions of the property that are intensively gardened for esthetics. And the worst part is that the settling isn't over quickly ... it is a long multi-year process that keeps calling and re-calling for touch-up and repair. In those situations, the stump has to come out, period. Again, the most productive way is to bring in a big excavator and dig it out. But in an established yard where you've lost one big tree, can you afford both the equipment expense and the footprint damage? So, sometimes, pulling it out is the best way to go. But I've seen many people making the effort without really understanding the tremendous power that MA can bring to the job. Admittedly, my setups were extreme, because my tractor is so small. But if you could pull with a loaded dump truck, for example, the setup would get much simpler ... and the stump would lift out instead of the truck tires trying to burrow to China ... !Thanks again for the nice comment and the interest.
