University of Utah - State of the Utes with Dr. Chris Hill
Our first interview with Dr. Chris Hill discussing the Utah athletics logo.
I Love the Drum and Feather logo AND the tie-in with the Ute Indian Tribe.
The family and community spirit of Utah and it's alumni, and how the spirit
is carried to sports. But, I am not a Native American, much less a member
of the Ute Indian Tribe. Keep the Drum/Feather and Ute mascot, but only if
it with the blessing of the Ute Indian Nation! I hope they choose to let
the University keep using it. I think it helps bring awareness and keeps
the Ute Indians in everyones' mind, "What's a UTE?"
First nations weren't allowed to practice ceremony until 1978 ( Indian
religious freedom act) and well feathers are part of the ceremonial tools
used in ceremony's . As long as there is no mascot and the selling of
headress I'm okay with it because mascots portraying traditional leaders or
elders that are wearing headdress is deem abusive and offensive. For
instance on does not simply receive a headdress just because, but thru
great respects to the receiver of the headdress. Another reason i
I'm not a fan of the drum & feather logo. Its current iteration is poorly
executed from an art/design standpoint. It is a plagiarized design,
"borrowed" from the NFL's Washington Redskins. The block U on the hillside
above campus is one of the university's most enduring images and represents
how most students and alumni refer to the university: "THE U". Just like
the University of Michigan's "M" or the University of Alabama's "A", the
block U design is instantly recognizable. Dump the drum.
This is great. I love the chance you are giving the fans to be a part of
the conversation. As for the logo, I feel that it should never be changed
and in my opinion I would love to see it used more. It would be pretty rad
to see the drum & feather logo in the middle of the basketball court in the
Huntsman Center! I have never heard of anyone being offended or seen people
offended by the logo as long as I have lived, but I am not native american
either. All I hear is great support!
It's time for the University of Utah to make some changes to the logo and
put this issue to rest. In Native American cultures that use the drum, it
is considered sacred to be able to play the drum. You have earn the right
to play it. You must be substance-free while playing the drum. It has high
spiritual value to Native American culture. To see it displayed in a manner
that is oppositional to it's true purpose is very offensive indeed. Let the
DRUM AND FEATHER GO
The Utes have had the logo for a long time, and should keep it. I
understand that it might have religious ties to certain tribes, but
different things can have more than one meaning, and you aren't going to be
able to always make everyone happy. People will always find something to be
offended by one way or another. I believe that a majority of ute fans want
the logo to stay, so they should keep it because it has a different meaning
to us.
Google "White Privilege" or the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous
People if you can't understand why the continued misappropriation of Native
American imagery is offensive and just another example of structural and
institutional racism. U of U fans will not switch to BYU if you are no
longer the name "Utes". The football team will still play on Saturday if
you change its name.
If we want to keep it, we need to listen to Dr. Hill (no relation,
incidentally) and be respectful of Native American imagery. There is no
need to wear headdresses--wear Utah hats! The Drum and Feather is a very
important part of the Utah tradition, and means a GREAT deal to alums like
me.
My rule is that you should not use peoples as your mascots. It isn't worth
it. Instead of constantly having to talk about your current logo/whatever
it would be easier to just switch it. There are plenty of animals to choose
from, some of them even have feathers if that's what you like.
I think the logo should be kept! I love it and I agree with a previous
poster that said it reminds people of where that logo and name (Utes) come
from. If we were to change our mascot to some sort of Indian-like
character, I would find that offensive.
The only people offended by the drum and feather are the white liberals
from cali. The Utea have given us their blessing to use the logo and name.
Lets not offend them by dropping it for fear of a cali liberal being
offended.
Is the U of U compensating them or is this more of the same, taking freely
from and misappropriating indigenous cultures? If so, I hope the Ute Tribal
Council reconsiders and take back their intellectual property.
Lee Hammock again answers crowdforger questions and talks about the priorities as we move forward to new iterations of the Pathfinder Online MMORPG.
