First drive review: 2012 Volkswagen Golf GTI versus 2012 Golf R
//www.TFLcar.com ) The 2012 Volkswagen Golf GTI is one of the best and fastest all-around small cars that you can buy today. But it needs all-wheel-drive, ...
Great review.. I agree with a lot of your points on both the cars. I in
fact did buy myself a '10 GTi base model AND a motorcycle with the money i
could have spent on the Golf R. I live in New England, however, and do not
believe the GTi needs AWD or more HP for that matter. Front wheel drive is
perfectly adequate for winter driving as I have lived here my whole life
and never gotten stuck (if it IS that bad, then stay home..). And with a
simple stage 1 tune I can keep up with the R no problem.
That is a 100% false answer! Just the jetta limousine and the Golf Variant
are built in Mexico the hatchbacks are all coming from Germany in
Wolfsburg, where the assembly line of the hatchbacks are! The difference in
power is maybe of law or emissionslaw which is different in other
countries, or its just of company policy! But a true fact is that the
hatches are all from Germany and i have seen even in the BMW factory in
Munich that the cars for the US gets different taillights with red blinkers
Yes, you are exactly correct. My US spec GTI with every option I can get
doesn't have a lot of the useful features the Euro spec GTI gets. For
example, I don't get any park assist system, electric damper control,
electric seats, auto dimming mirrors, rain sensing wipers, and I'm sure
there's still more. I have a lot less functions with the car's lighting
system. I have the RNS 315 nav system which is cheaper. There's more to my
complains but no room, and this is probably why it's cheaper.
Haven't driven either of the mk6's but for the mk5 the GTI was waaaaay
better to drive than the R32, felt more responsive and more exciting, the
extra weight just kills the fun. Unless you need 4wd there's no need for
it. I would like to see Roman test the Edition 35 GTI (if you get it in
USA?) as the Edition 30 mk5 was awesome and would smoke the more powerful
R32 all day long! (I used to work for VW and everybody who I worked with
agreed the GTI was the better car)
I couldn't agree more with you about AWD (or at least RWD) and more power,
but I'm not sure about firmer suspension and bigger breaks, because I just
love the way GTI handles, and its breaks have been fantastic for me. I put
aFe Air Intake on mine and just love it. The R didn't impress me at all.
For extra $10,000 I was expecting much more. I couldn't even tell if it was
faster than my GTI or not (I may have 10hp more with the new Intake)! Good
review though.
LOL why is the GTI in the USA so cheap? In Germany the GTI starts at 26000€
and with no Navigation and Xenonheadlights at all, just with the basic
stuff. And the R starts at 37000€ wtf? We ship this car to states tousends
of Km by ship and its even cheaper in the US as in Germany were we produce
it? And even they got the cheaper gas prizes, thats not fair! But the GTI
has 210hp and the R has got 270hp
Dude you have to drive a car with a DSG to understand the difference. In
everyday use it will be ur best friend and when it comes to sport driving
this thing will shift so fast that if you compare the same car with dsg vs
manual the dsg will be at least 3 cars ahead. Before driving one i would
never consider buying a sporty automatic car but when i had a test drive in
one of those i was really surprised.
I think it's mainly due to taxes, if I remember correctly your sales tax on
new vehicles is 6%, whereas, in the UK ,and most of Europe, sales tax is
15%+ (20% in UK). Also sometimes manufacturers use cheaper parts on US
models as they know they are competing with cheaper manufacturers that
offer similar performance for a lower price, I know BMW always used to do
this, not sure about VW
The variables in the output figures on an engine have little to do with
"worse fuel". The numerical ratings don't make a 91 octane inferior to a 93
octane. You have to factor in the tune, emissions control regulations,
compression ratios, etc. The octane rating of the fuel has far more to do
with clean combustion principles with all of these factors in place than
output rating.
I really have to be honest- the Golf R should have 300 horses STOCK. 300 is
easily attainable with an ECU upgrade from APR ($800) but still.. I just
bought a GTI and I cannot fathom why one would buy a Golf R. Interior isn't
that much better, AWD is good, but tires makes the difference... meh, I
want the Golf R to succeed, but I just feel that VW shot themselves in the
foot.
Great video! I love the GTI and I certainly do agree that AWD, firmer
suspension with better brakes, and more power would be much appreciated. I
would love to see the next GTi to have a bit more power and torque, at
least.. The rest of the stuff is just too expensive to put all at once. R
is a great car, but is too pricey :/ 250ish hp is not enough to make you go
like WOW.
It's always a real ballbuster with cars coming from Europe without all the
neat stuff. We went for years driving the dopey ass Americanized version of
the Ford Focus, while the Brits and Europeans were driving the nice, sporty
UK version with the performance engine. Ford's management needs it's ass
stomped for handing us it's cheap, boring garbage all those years.
I am considering to replace my 2011 Corolla S with a Golf but I am unhappy
to hear that they are not made in Germany. I would never buy another new
car made in North America, every car I've bought built in Canada, Mexico or
here in the US have given me nothing but problems (including that piece of
shit Corolla) so looks like my only option is a Mazda3??
Roman you forgot to say one thing which for me is a huge negative for the
R. Over 200lbs heavier than the GTI. I drove both and for me that makes a
difference. Forget even the price difference, the GTI is a little more
comfortable, a little sharper in turns, and overall I think for day to day
driving its the better choice.
The USA doesn't realize how cheap cars are over there. You can get
everything half price pretty much including supercars like Lambo's. I could
go over there at age 20 and buy a brand new fully optioned GTI where as
here in Australia i can only afford a second hand one with 40,000km's and a
few years old.
You forgot to mention the fake engine noise pumped into the cabin by the
Soundaktor speaker. Car & Driver magazine covered it. It's in every GTI
from 2011+. It's a hockey puck sized buzzer speaker behind the windshield
wiper arms. Removing it is easy and it actually allows you to hear real
engine noise.
The nice thing about DSG is that you *don't* have to give up your
involvement with driving - you can still choose your shift points, after
all. I'd love to see a study of shift reaction times for the six-speed
manual vs DSG paddle shifters or the sport shift. I'm willing to bet
they're almost spot-on.
2007 VW golf GTI review (Kansai Driver 1)
Be gentle, this is my first car review. We find a windy road and chat about my thoughts on the Mk5 Golf GTI. Edit this map to show me where you want to go!
Was it a WRX or an STI that you were looking at? What year? I'm surprised
you think the interior was huge in the Suby, but I haven't been in a GTI so
by comparison that could be very true. The biggest question though: How
fast does it shift? ;D
I just felt so small inside I felt like even the dash was high like I was a kid who wasn't tall enough to see all the way over. The way I feel about this transmission changes nothing about how slow the Lamborghini shifts. XD
I've made two more but between you and me this one was my favorite. I can see me doing these once in a while though.
