The 76 merger restricted the Spurs from drafting players till the 1979 draft and making limited deals due to indemnity checks to the NBA. James Silas knees went out before the merger and had only good year. So, when Doug Moe became coach, he put less time on practice and defense due to these limitations and used George for matchup exploitation. I believe those circumstances helped George as a player from 76-79 because he could display his game. But by 79, I believe those circumstances contributed to his drug use. Things got better when The Spurs were able to draft and Stan Albeck became coach. But those three years shortened his career because they couldn't develop younger players like today's Spurs can. Give George the younger players that Steph Curry has? To me, the merger really happened after the 1979 season due to the restrictions and George was the last ABA superstar.
Gervin was fascinating. At the height of 6'8, he was something like 190
pounds and yet he played like a much larger man. With his frame you would
expect him to rely far more on quickness like a Reggie Miller or a Rip
Hamilton. Yet he was very Durant/ Kobe like in terms of where he caught the
ball and how he got off his shot... fascinating.
+norrisb1981 Imagine if Ice had played in a major market like Dr J. Erving was a known commodity having played in NY in ABA. Gervin was unsung and would have been HUGE in a media market.
Back in the day the 76ers had the best one on one basketball player of his
day - yet he was able to play a team concept of picking, rolling, and
moving w/o the basketball or going into the pivot and getting position. the
passing from player to player was quick, decisive, and on time.
I predict tonight (Monday Nov 17, 2014) the Spurs will score 134 points and
the tanking 76ers might score 80
Q: Is this supposed to be the first season in the NBA with the 3-point
line? 1979-80? Sorry, I almost forgot: The Hemisfair Arena: still marked
with ABA 3-point lines. Awesome!
IVERSON mi jugador favorito.
