can someone explain what this is to a newbie? I'm reading a script for a
film that says "shot in 70mm" and i don't know what it is, what to compare
it to, how it looks different, etc.
+herpderpmonkey to be basic 70mm is BIGGER. double 35mm and you get 70mm. In case of H8ful - he used special anamorphic lenses so it's ULTRA WIDE too, sorry bout caps lol
+herpderpmonkey goddams to all these comments! 70mm is before digital projection, its a way to say what aspect ratio the movie is showed in cinema. 70 mm also means its shot with film, real film, no digital stuff. also the most common mistake is saying 70 mm is 1080p, bluray is 1080p and digital camera's are set in 1080p and higher but film has no resolution set thats what it makes so beautifully to watch! it has a natural look unlikely the moviess shot with RED.
Adding to what the other guy said, 70mm (also referred to as 65mm), aside from having much more resolution, has less noticeable film grain, especially when transferred to 35mm. 70mm has a greater tonal range, and since it requires either longer lenses or closer focusing, it often has a shallower depth of field. When run through the camera horizontally, you get the boxy screen you know as IMAX (this is as good as it gets). When run through the camera vertically (as most cameras do 5-perforation, not 8) you get an aspect ratio of 2.20:1. If I'm right, the screenplay you're referring to is The Hateful Eight? Well from what I've gathered (that is, read off of IMDB's tech specs) the film will be in the 2.76:1 aspect ratio, meaning he (and don't quote me on this) will probably use anamorphic lenses with 5-perforation (the height of the negative in regards to the sprocket holes lining it) 65mm for a much wider field of view (a wider screen). For reference, look at Ben-Hur or It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which both used that process.
+herpderpmonkey so cool, man. I can't wait. I heard he changed some stuff (including the ending), so you haven't totally ruined it for yourself. Just watched Dogs the other day. Great film, however I feel 70mm would be better suited for a film with diverse landscape. Oh well, maybe I'm just ignorant. Either way I'll be there.
+Chris Vongkoth "Shot in beautiful 70mm" Tarantino put that in his script like 4 times. I kept wondering wtf was 70mm.I regret reading it. I regret it soooo much. it felt like tarantino finally going back to his roots like reservoir dogs, just a room, some actors, and great writing.
+herpderpmonkey 70 mm refers to the size of the film stock. The term "70 mm" means that each frame of the film stock is 70 millimeters wide, which, compared to the standard 35 mm film stock, means higher resolution. It's like comparing 4K digital resolution to 1080 resolution.

Holiday Bowl 2014 (Nebraska v Southern California) One Hour
Two storied programs meet on the turf of San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium in a bowl game that is always amongst the most exciting during any bowl season.
+kevolicious Riley is a hit on the bacon and beans circuit and he's resurrected the Oregon State program so now with some better talent, maybe he'll be successful?
Had this game in our hands just blew it, not just that though, it was also
the fact USC's D came up big in the last 2 drives and at the end of the 1st
half
+num1huskerfan1 when I said we had zero depth is was because of scholarship reductions as well as injuries. No way you can compare lack of depth for nebraska to USC. We lost three games in 2014 because of it. Utah is a prime example, I was at the game and USC was out of players in the 4th quarter. I give kuddos to Nebraska sticking around and I am upset that sark took his foot of the throttle. This year will be much different with Sark never easing off the throttle. USC has had 4 coaches in 3yrs. Played the vegas bowl against fresno state with their second interim coach that season.
And you think Nebraska had depth... HELL no!! Plus we had just fired our coach and that took extremely hard to the players, and yes we did have it, but our QB doesn't know when to just take a sack, or throw a ball away, plus we had the ball well into our kickers range on our 2nd to last drive and our intern head coach decided to go for it, I'm not trying to take away from usc's performance, they played good.
+num1huskerfan1 USC had zero depth in 2014 struggled to finish games all year. I am over comments like we had this game in our hands. getting stopped out of the redzone is far from having a game in your hands. Arizona wide right.. that is losing a game they should have one.
+num1huskerfan1 It was a weird game. USC seemingly had the game in hand but Nebraska never gave up and had a chance at the end. Playing without a head coach, the Huskers should be commended for their heart.
