Cool project dude. I would look into serious sanctioned body tech
requirements for cages before you attempt the cage. The spot you pointed
out for the rear downbar mounting location looks like nothing more than a
firewall. You need a solid location which is usually the shock tower. I
know GGD allows the rear down bar to be mounted to the wheel well but I
would aim for the shock tower if I were you. I'm pretty sure your current
mount location won't allow you to pass tech since it has no real structural
rigidity.
Tanks! Ya thats what I thought too but Julian DuMays cage is going to that spot and he call cortex at Sonoma and asked if it was ok to go there. And they said ya, and he passed teck. I guess it holds the back seat in and is considered a structural part of the car. On E36's you cant go to the shock tower because its in the wheel well. but ya I already cut the tubing for it. Honestly it just a wednesday night car so ya.
Ya I meant to film a vid of that today but i ran out of time. I should have one up in a couple days. I love that body style as well!
Subaru Impreza Roll Cage Fabrication
A little clip I made of a few hours of TIG welding the roll cage and cage feet in my 96 Subaru Impreza rally car. All notching, bending and welding done by me.
What are the 2 light sources that you're using? I usually find it helpful
to have good light when welding and I don't have an arc lit, but often
something bright enough to work well is bulky enough to be in the way a
lot.
I used a large drop light above everything as you see but for up close I used a magnetic LED light that was small and didnt get in the way. Being able to see what youre doing as well as watching the puddle Absolutely necessary for a good weld
Did you cut holes in the floor pan so you could drop the cage down to weld
the top of it? Im planning to build a cage myself and would rather use
chromoly tubing and tig weld it but couldn't figure out how I was going to
weld the top portion in the car
Thank you. It will mostly be a street car with spirited mountain driving and some track use. I wanted chromoly for the weight savings, but safety and quality are far more important to me than weight. Not sure what you meant about the boxes but I'm definitely taking a look at the build thread
yup that how I did it. I did it that way because I didn't want to remove the windshields and roof skin. You have to make boxes on the floors to mock up the bars to raise them off the floor so you have room to cut the holes. when its all mocked up you tack it together and drop through the floors. If you are building a cage for rally I wouldn't use chromoly. First of all it is illegal in most sanctioning bodies and second it isn't as safe as DOM steel against tree strikesheres my build thread if you want to check it out//www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?31083-Flat4Rallys-RA-spec-cage-build
