Been there, done that - "hitting the cinders". Perhaps even with that same
locomotive.
I don't think its the loco. To protect the (wood) ties from the sun, MLS
(Maricopa Live Steamers) runs the ballast very high and wind or water can
pile it up such that the flange rides over the rail and kathunk, you're on
the ground. Although to do it on the entrance to the yard - probably the
most used section of track - is a new one for me.
If you are in the area and are interested, MLS has a very reasonable dues
structure and even allows members (with a minor surcharge) to operate
club-owned locos, like the one that hit the cinders. FUN!
Check out January meet, as has been mentioned previously on this thread (
maricopalivesteamers.com). Next one is Jan 14 - 17, 2016.
+Toy Man Television That switch is not intended as a spring switch, as normal routing is in the direction you were going. Yes, folks (including me) have backed through it, but that's the exception. Most switches on the layout are designed to be used as spring switches and all are the same design.BTW, when you were here it was the (blessed) end of our summer weather. I tell folks we should be thankful for the 110˚ days, otherwise the metro population would be 50 million.
+Bruce Petrarca This was a loose spring on the points. Not closed tight enough. Hot rails and points make problems. They use a spring to keep the points tight on this switch, not as a spring switch, but oops.
Enjoyed this. It's okay to, "..Come to the dark Side Luke.." Somehhow I can
see you and the Bride to build one of your own. Being a, "Half baked' 1:20.3
railroad Guy, I can see the fun in it. Our, Golden Gate Live Steamers in
Tilden park, East of San Francisco, have their fun, but, n where near the
size of this fabulous Adobe Mountain line. Brilliant and fun.
+Jeanne Uzar Never met a scale I didn't like. Even 1:1. But at this time I'm planning 2 layouts, 1:20.3 at Garagemahal and HOn3 (with some dual gauge, or dueling gauge) here at the house. And some On3 and On30 models to run at Steve' s and Don's.
Great video! Quick correction though, that building is the museum, the club
house is a few steps from the station. Also, definitely come out in January
during the Ops meet. It surely is something to see.
