The original is sung by Barry not in falsetto, but using a "breathing" sound, very effective in studio, bur a little weak for a live act.

This was the first album to feature BGs falsetto, so maybe they were worried that the audience wouldn't embrace the falsetto in live settings.  Or maybe his falsetto wasn't as honed yet so it was easier to put on a good performance singing in a lower octave.

Wow... It's hard to believe that this is real. Not what I expected at all from the cover art! Reminds me of my experience with Toby and Barb's "Father Knows Best" (I'm referring specifically to their over-the-top "The Brightest Star" track!)
