+Santas withGuns For this woman to make the journey from a whole stack of victim issues, and Fundamentalist religious addiction to Freethinking is stunning. Her lead-in talk about her and her family is slowwwwwwwwwwww and monotonous, and is probably a relic from her religious beginings, as many religious people start their talks and debates with this often superfluous information. That a woman like this can shift her mindset is stunning, simply stunning.Kudos to this woman, BRAVO. That this woman can make the intellectual leap from primitive superstition to embracing verifiable reality in the modern world, gives me hope for humanity and the religiously shackled.Bravo Vyckie Garrison, .... How to talk to a fundamentalist:
Kick them in the shin and move on. Or if on youtube, be real sarcastic and
don't bother to get into real arguments with them. Because talking to
Fundumbmentalists is the epitome of wasted time.
You'd have a more stimulating and meaningful conversation talking to a
brick wall.
Speech over.
+TheThinkingAtheist "What a tragic perspective regarding believers."Fundamentalists. "We should call out bullshit when/where we see it"Got me there. I admit to withholding information for the sake of gratification, knowing something others do not. "we should also be in the business of creating dialogue, challenging damaging ideas and changing minds in favor of science and reason."Creating dialogue with who, exactly, people who think it is okay for you to be tortured for disagreeing with you, people who would kill you if they could get away with it? I am good.
+TheThinkingAtheist You're one of the very few who were able to break free and fortunately someone felt you were worth their time and energy to openly challenge your faith. Most Atheists just look at Christians with "pity" because we haven't lost our sense of "logic" and ability to maintain our "common sense". It's funny how Christians feel the same way about us, that we are the ignorant ones when it's they who haven't taken the time to research history to learn the "Origins of Religion"...all the former Messiah's who are now part of our history books, and the cycle will just repeat itself over and over..as the ignorant praise each new Messiah. It's the kids that I feel sorry for because in my opinion it's child abuse, to force any religion on a child when they aren't even old enough to make their own decisions. Unfortunately they will grow up to pass this "disease" on to their children. The world would be such a better place if people just grew up and stopped relying on a grown up Santa Claus because in reality that's all they want...is someone to love them unconditionally and to give them hope for eternal life. They waste their whole life praying and worshiping this non-deity instead of enjoying the only life they have. Kathleen~ Ps. Seth you are sooo Hot..! {{wink wink}}
+IAMELIPHAS I agree it is frustrating and most of the time you will not manage to change their minds. But that is exactly what Vyckie is talking about; some fundamentalists will listen and being compassionate and understanding is a far better method than calling them idiots. I believe the world would be a better place if people bothered to question their own convictions and, as such, trying to change people's mind is worth it, no matter how hard (or, in some cases, impossible) it might be. Let's follow Vyckie's uncle example of going about it, shall we?
I founded a charitable organization (unfortunately still thriving) dedicated to creating and distributing creationist and bible literature. I wrote countless pages of creationist literature and bible commentary and the Web site we created houses hundreds of articles on those subjects, mostly written by me (and I still have people online sending me links to my own articles to help their point). I learned. I came to understand what science really is, so much so that I now teach it. I reach, write and fully understand biblical Hebrew as well as I do English and I learned. I came to understand reality. I'm not saying there aren't occasions to be an ass. I don't think people like Ham and Hovind need to be mocked. But not so much their followers because I used to be one.
+IAMELIPHAS What a tragic perspective regarding believers. If someone had given up on me because I had been "wasted time," I might never have found my Personal Relationship With Reality. We should call out bullshit when/where we see it, but we should also be in the business of creating dialogue, challenging damaging ideas and changing minds in favor of science and reason. Some of us were "brick walls." But we were worth the investment of time and energy, and ultimately, the hard (and often frustrating) conversations about God ultimately led to our freedom. -Seth Andrews
This is great! I can really picture her as a fundamentalist Christian,
especially here in Nebraska. And I thought her talk was fascinating.
It's funny that they were named the "Family of the Year" in 2003 by the
Family Research Council, a fundamentalist Christian group based here in
Lincoln, and then that she was named the 2014 "Atheist of the Year" by
American Atheists.
What's not so funny is that the "Family of the Year" gets a lot of press
here in Nebraska, but as far as I've seen, there hasn't been one word about
"Atheist of the Year" being awarded to one of the previous winners.
+Bill Garthright Well, that would be like press releases about how pedophile priests sit at the head of the Vatican... the first part is news, the second is a call to arms to defend the institution.

Daniel Lapin Says 'The State Religion Of Secular Fundamentalism' Seeks To Obliterate Christianity
//www.rightwingwatch.org/content/lapin-state-religion-secular-fundamentalism-seeks-obliterate-christianity Right Wing Watch reports on the extreme rhetoric ...
Silly me, all this time I always thought it was fundamentalists Christians
who try to obliterate Jews every century or so. The Jews did fine in Muslim
Spain, it was when the Christians took over they all got told to convert or
leave the country.
+aido92 The founding fathers put science above all. Jefferson and Franklin considered themselv es "deists"--and they, with John Adams, wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution/Amendments (they were actually adopted at the same time). They absolutely did not want a religious state, having learned of the Inquisition and the Church of England and its complicity with the rloyals... They were men of the Enlightenment. They valued reason and science above all. Jefferson even pulled out the words of Jesus from the Bible, wrote them up in a separate document, and sent copies of them to his friends, believing that everything else in the Bible was suspect. The 1st Amendment to the Constitution is a serious separation of church and state, and a requirement that the state never act in any way to promote the establishment of religion. Any religion. So I'd say that for quite a few years, there was fundamentally secular government in the U.S. In fact, the Freemasons had more to do with America than Christianity. The "G" stands more for geometry than God... I think the government may have become more Christian after WWII? I can't think of overtly Christian things before that.
+Joseph Immorlica Becaujse Crazy Christians are sending tons of cash to make sure that the Apocalypse happens the way the Bible predicted. Something to do with Jews taking back something from Muslims in Jerusalem?
"Secular fundamentalism" is an oxymoron, you moron! These right-wingers are
in such stubborn denial over the fact that the United States is secular *by
design*.
No, little Danny, let's do it the American way, as secular humans. We tried
it god's way for three thousand years, and all we got was terror,
oppression and sexual abuse. Maybe it's time for you and your god to fuck
off and let the adults fix what you broke.
According to Linda Harvey, among God's gifts to the world is the feeling that gay people are "yucky," or at least that is what she said during an interview ...
Linda is another perfect example of an extremist CHRISTIAN who makes
themselves look like total scum everytime they open their mouths. These
people need too PRAY for HUMANITY i.e. the fact that they have NONE too
begin with.
So Linda Harvey thinks homosexuality is "yucky", kids are born homophobic,
and schools should tolerate anti-gay bullying and tell gay kids to suppress
their sexuality. The Christian right once again proving that they are
ignorant, afraid, and hateful. Earlier comments note children may have an
aversion to the opposite sex; however, I highly doubt that Linda Harvey
would engourage those feelings or support sex segregation policies.
100 years ago the christians taught that colored people were "yucky", kids are born racist, and schools should tolerate racial bullying and tell colored kids that they should be separated from the rest of society. They just switched their bigotry from colored to homosexual folk.
+Transhumanism [h+] No, it's not really. This response is to do with the stages of same/opposite sex socialisation, not gender preference. There are lots of things we consider yucky that w hold that way for life for good biological reasons - faeces, rotting flesh, open wounds, bad smells. That said, I disagree with her argument. I'm simply saying that this counter argument is equally weak.

+Florin A I figured I would address prayer, separately. Prayer has value to me in several (though not limited to) ways: First, prayer is a wonderful thing that brings peace, and calm. It is a meditative act that can humble you, and help you focus on what is important.Second, it reminds you that not everything is up to you, and bad crap will always happen, but prayer connects you to the divine, to those which can affect your life here. Sometimes the answer is no, but as a believer it provides hope to know the creator of the universe is listening to you.Third, sometimes prayer brings helping hands, or inspires you to be those helping hands. God has mysterious ways of doing things, it is impossible for me to fathom how He figures out how to answer prayer, or whether to answer. But my prayers have been answered, both yesses and No's. The no's have a tendency to turn people away from God, but they miss His healing when they do that......oh and I am a Roman Catholic.
+Florin A Man has done wonderful things, but is barely recognizable when compared to creation itself. That which created man, and the rock on which man resides, is much more awesome and wonderous. When man can create a planet out of nothing, still they wouldn't even be close to what God can do. The intricacy of every detail of existence is just astounding; how even the slightest variation in genetic code can fundamentally alter what something is, or becomes, or does, or features. How every human fingerprint is different, unique, is amazing. How each of us is different from each other, is amazing. This and so much more makes man just a spec in the grandeur of time and existence. Yet, my God makes me special, my God gives that spec of time meaning, and purpose. My God leads me through it.
+Richard Stubbs Jr For me god is The Man.There is nothing above man.Man built huge cities, man created wonder gadgets, man flew to space,etc...if you want a change prayers don't help.Only taking action and working hard will help.Prayers are for the lazy, weak ones. What kind of christian are you?
+Florin A I have not seen God. I don't know He exists from a book. I have neither heard His voice, nor felt His touch. However, I have sensed His presence and guidance and attention at various events in my life. I wonder what it will be like when I do see Him, I have no idea what I will do. Will I sing for Him? Just stand there, in awe of Him and be still? Will I fall to my knees? Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to sing at all? I can only imagine what I will do, oh mercy me, I can only imagine. ;) Yet, I know the day will come and my spirit tells me this is true. God can be experienced without the physical senses, its mind boggling I know, but its true. That's why its called faith. Who could ever have faith that first required proof? Then it wouldn't be faith, and it wouldn't be personal. John 20:29
+Florin A No one fucking forgot about those, we hear about them all the time even though they took place centuries ago. What we actually don't hear about is the Atheist atrocities committed by Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, etc., which took millions of lives less than a century ago. Atheism is a cancer.
+Florin A Yes you are right, but did you know the inquisitions (which cost the lives of about 5000people) were and had to be at the request of the monarchs? Here we see instances where government leaders exploited the church and used it as a militant arm. The torture and crimes were actually authorized by the papal decree, but in that decree there was to be no "bloodshed, death, or mutilation". The evil you have heard about with regards to the inquisition, took place at the hands of people acting contrary to the decree of the religious organization. People don't need religion or God as an excuse to hurt each other, we have many differences, but religion and God is the only thing that works to bringing us together.
+Richard Stubbs Jr Religious extremism is worse than cancer...have we forgoten the Inquisition and the role played by the church in hunting smart people, smart women calling thwm withches and burning them alive?
Or how about extremism of any kind rather it be religion, atheism and political. You did not have your family taken away and executed in camps or seen a church burned down with 100s of people inside because of atheist extremism.
Say what you want about the Catholics and Muslims, militant Atheism has
killed more than 20 million people in the 20th century alone.
Cold hard facts that some like to ignore.
+Patriot News Network Great point. Funny how atheists always point to the crusades as an example of religious extremism (usually ignoring the fact that the most grievous acts were actually against established doctrines). The crusades were in the dark ages, when man was supposedly less developed intellectually and spiritually. Yet, atheism kills now, right now. What does that say about such a belief?
