Cherokee alternator and battery voltage test

Checking the voltage of the XJ at idle trying to determine if I have a bad alternator and/or battery which is hopefully associated with my stalling issue.

U should let the battery rest for about an hour than tested,ihave a jeep geand cherokee and had the sane problem i never saw a 14+ in my readings till i got an external voltage regulator now i have 14.4 volts,jeeps electrical system sucks

Hey, did you ever figure anything out? I have a 96 XJ sport classic. The volt-meter in the dash is reading low; 9ish I think. In the red though. Best of luck.

I'm currently having the same problem and I replaced my alternator but I'm still having the same issue, what was the issue with yours?

the problem is alternator, just spent 100 dollars to fix it

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Alternator issue

This is the issue I'm having with my alternator.. If I press down on the black box with the field terminals, it starts charging..I let go and it stops.

mine just started doing the exact same thing except my alt is mounted under the ac unit but same thing i can pry on the connector and itll charge i havent figured out a solution yet.

Try opening up the alternator. It seems like a bad connection. You most likely will have to use some emery or crocus cloth to clean the contacts.
