It's hard to tell, but if you go to JHelioviewer and look at the recent activity, down at the bottom left hand corner it looks like a filament eruption, right under the area you are highlighting. Did you notice that? It looks dark, but when you zoom in it makes a nice loop, looks like it to me. Would you check it out and tell me what you think? Wanna know if I am just seeing things or if I caught one!! Peace- Carpo

yes i read that also, but if it where to happen? Not to be a fear monger but it would destroy our infrastructure as we know it? Least that was my understanding. It happens more often than other cataclysms such as meteors and ice ages or pole shifts...or any number of other things. Heard about methane or such been released. Cataclysm is probably wrong word, just cycles of the earth. Cataclysmic to us of course =)

Well 4 billion years and we are all still here - not impossible just extremely unlikely with the Sun at its current stage of evolution (late type G4) and it will get less active as it spins down. In about 4 billion years time when it blows off a planetary nebula and expands beyond Venus' orbit, I sure would not like to be around. But that poses a question: "How do we leave a warning for the ants?"

lol...honestly? The mayans would have laughed at our technology. They understood the sun much better than we do. And without electricity, solar flares would not affect them much technically at all. But the spiritual connection they were well aware of, and they predicted solar events better than we do. Maybe not every single flare, but they knew what mattered. Hence the calendar.. peace- Carpo

That is what happens when you get a very bright source. The mirror is made up of alternating layers of reflective and transmissive materials spaced such that they reflect only a narrow band of light (the wavelength of the line we want to see - e.g., He II, Fe IX, etc.). When you get a bright source like a flare the light penetrates deep into the mirror and you bet multiple reflections.

The Carrington flare itself was not particularly large. We have had several larger ones in the modern era with no major effects. What made the resultant geomagnetic storm so powerful was that a large, slow CME preceded a very fast CME and cleared the way for it to directly hit Earth with the optimum magnetic polarity to break into the magnetosphere..

YouTube needs some kind of legal protection as this has now become a system for information and data sharing. As it exists now Google could take down YouTube anytime they wanted. A good amount of my life research is done via YouTube. The truth movement will be severely set back without YouTube to be an outlet for ideas.

We will see, the last 3 regions like this died as they rotated onto the disk. It may be happening again - the X-ray background is falling and the size of the events getting smaller. Another way of looking at that it that it is winding up for another big one. You pays your money and takes your choice.

I doubt they would the outcry would be deafening. I just wish that posters could not block comments (unless threatening or libelous) or have their minions vote away contrary posts. I have been blocked by so many on YT for just pointing out where they are wrong.

What is your opinion on the Carrington Event, if it were to hit us today. I know we have not shielded our electronics to such an event. A world with out electricity would not function very well. Apparently such an event happens every 500 or so years.

I think there is a CME associated with this flare...SOHO is showing a bright coronal mass ejection in the updated images...It is a big region...I feel we're going to see more out of this one. Thanks Doc for the fast uploads....Peace!

I mentioned it on Twitter - they did a server maintenance and then could not get the data bases to load. We did not miss much the Sun was relatively quiet until yesterday and besides SDO was doing calibration manoeuvres for 2 days.

Nope, I did not. This was a report on the new region, not a "Sun Today" video. That I will do later tomorrow (senior golf league championship tomorrow o my report will be later) unless we get another big flare in the mean time.

A NASA scientist (note not NASA itself) says that Jupiter is undergoing "global changes" not cataclysmic changes - that's what the blog titled it. Most of the "new" things seem to be old things viewed with new instrumentation.
