well, you said it yourself in your last paragraph: any measure of contentment in this world depends on achieving things within the social framework by which you are inculcated. you can call it brainwashing all you like, but that doesn't make it any less an unavoidable reality. as to prostitution being categorically false in your terms, i simply don't understand how you can make that assumption. some people who do it are going to consider it a decent profession for them, by merit of the fact that this world is full of endlessly various minds, some of whom find the oddest things pleasurable and fulfilling. it is not your place to proscribe particularly avenues for them. 

I think you're giving a little too much credit to this idea of "true happiness" in the same way that many people over-credit "true love." Happiness, which is not false, is definitely a feeling that people can achieve. If you're happy in your life you know it... You could be a miserable billionaire, surrounded by pleasurable distractions, and not be happy, but by way of introspection and self study you could determine WHY you're unhappy, what your life isn't providing, and work to make yourself happier in your life overall.Our culture brainwashes the masses into thinking that material things are the catalyst in the growth process-- a successful adult has a car, a successful adult has a house, a successful adult has a smartphone, goes on vacation, takes pictures of their food... for how long? because if a person is pursuing anything more than moments of transient pleasure by means of lifestyle considerations then that person is in error. atlas seems to be saying there is an alternate life that can be sought which will yield more than simple relief from "this cold, modern reality..." which proves only "...temporary, fleeting, and comes with new problems to offset any benefits that you reap, just like with drugs, money, or any other modern trap of the mind". i see no evidence of such a choice around me. i see only people trying to distract themselves with things, those things sometimes leading to moments of pleasure: not happiness–pleasure; which cannot be sustained; which may occur regularly but cannot be relied upon in any dependable sense. how can atlas possibly know that prostitution does not yield such a thing for certain individuals? i maintain that all things can yield such sources of intermittent pleasure for some particular people.

+Atlas Westbrook you seem to be assuming true happiness is achievable. i have met a good number of people for whom it is not. they know too much about the futility of existence for it to ever be. and i am not convinced, in any case, that anyone is capable of true happiness. i don't think it exists. i think the human condition is antithetical to it. i think people who claim they are are either going through a smooth patch or else are very skilled self-deceivers.

That hole in culture where God used to be, that lack of spirituality in general, makes a person's perception quite skewed when they get to a point in life where they ask themselves, "Should i say yes to selling my body in this moment?" I agree that it should be the woman's choice-- If it's indeed a woman, men prostitute themselves too-- But our culture takes the choice away from them.People are a product of their environment like any other mammal. We're more focused on short term pleasure and become very materialistic.At the end of the day, it's the woman's choice, but I feel the phrase 'the grass isn't always greener on the other side' is quite fitting.

Other people chase it down a rope of tangled, throbbing penises. My issue with prostitution isn't that it happens, it's that it happens to people who are looking for salvation from this cold, modern reality. They give up a part of themselves and forever de-sensitize themselves to real intimate connections with other human beings in exchange for a different life... But the other life isn't as different as you think it's going to be. It's temporary, fleeting, and comes with new problems to offset any benefits that you reap, just like with drugs, money, or any other modern trap of the mind.
