+Julie Cook The legend of the Lambton Worm is from County Durham and dates from a period long before Sunderland existed, although in modern geographical terms it is closer to the City of Sunderland than Durham City. There are many similarities between folk stories from the North East and those of Scandinavia, which are much more gruesome than their more southern counterparts. So even though they are meant for children, the stories do not quash the sense of danger and maturity, unlike many modern recounts of folk stories from elsewhere.
