Motorcycle Insurance
How I saved a bunch of money switching FROM Geico...AND a dumb cager pulls in front of me. Don't worry, no crash.
Great topic that impacts heavily. I'm age 62, male-homeowner-cleandriving
record blah-blah-blah with progressive paying approx $275/yr liability only
for my insane superb Cbr1100xx
I just got my first bike last week and got my endorsement yesterday. I'm a
male, 35, own my own home, bike is being paid for. I called my car
insurance (encompass) and they informed me they wouldnt cover me because i
am a rider with less than 5 years experience riding. I was looking into 3
bikes to purchase and was quoted through my insurance agent getting a quote
from a participating carrier $1,300 a year for a 2013 slightly used (3k
miles) Triumph Daytona 675. I estimated this to be a middle ground rate for
a sportbike and my other two choices were a 2013 left over, new R6 and a
2014 left over, new CBR 650F. I figured insurance would be slightly more
for the R6 and slightly less for the CBR and i went to two different
dealerships to see the bikes. The CBR dealer had none in stock but a quick
trip to www.cycle-ergo.com showed me my riding position based on my height
and inseam. The CBR has a very sporty look but is almost a fully upright
position. That was a plus to me and the dealer made me an extremely insane
deal if i bought a left over in their warehouse. So i put down over half
the cost of the bike to keep my payments at $100 a month and then went to
progressive.com on my phone and got my insurance from them. Full coverage
with a $500 ded. and $250k med funding came to only $360 for the year. I
was very surprised it was so inexpensive and I had to check it twice to
make sure I had read it correctly. My full demographics put in were:
Male, married, own home, live in NJ, currently does NOT have motorcycle
license (had permit at the time), employed, bike used for pleasure.
That was the middle quote from them. There was a full-blown coverage and a
lower liability (plus minimum needed to cover bike with bank lien) the
lower was $320 the higher was just over $800.
Hope this helps. I was informed by my insurance that at 35 males move out
of the high risk category (guess my waning testosterone) and the bike was
my birthday present to myself... Lowered rate was a bonus of which I was
unaware.
I have heard horror stories of super and hypersports having early 20
something males insurance rates over $1,000 a month.
+ReviewFever the 650F is a great learning bike. Save up a bit of cash, and sell it. My friend just got an awesome 750 GSXR (2011, 10k miles) for 6300 bucks...you'll be a better rider learning on a 'tame' bike IMHO.
+Leonine Shift yeah i was lucky to get the bike at the right price, the insurance was a complete surprise. Im at just under 200 miles on the bike now and absolutely love it, but find myself wondering how the pull of my engine compares to the torque and wide open throttle of a GSXR or RR 600. My insurance might be lower because i feel like my bike should produce more power, but the way it's built is not as balls-to-the-wall... the only way i can think to make a comparison is to use a computer simile... my 650 is like a celeron processor. sure it says its a 2 gHz model but the 1.9 gHz pentium (GSXR/RR) will outperform it any day.... Thus the cost of the celeron is less than that of the pentium. Pay a higher insurance premium for that "Intel Inside" i wonder what my quote would have been if i'd have gone with a new FZ. Sure is a sweet bike. Enjoy it and keep making these great videos!
+ReviewFever Funny how Progressive worked so well for you and so poorly for me! That sounds like a great deal on your bike AND your insurance....Congrats!
