how in mick jagger's sake do a woman who refuses to have children of her
own encourage other women to bring babies to the world? how could she
convince women from not having abortion when she never had one herself? do
you know what is going on in a woman's mind when she is pregnant? do you
understand and comprehend their insecurities? worries? fears? you want to
teach people to drive but you don't want to get into a car? don't you
understand how absurd you are?
Thank You, Sisters
James Martin S.J., pays homage to the remarkable legacy of women religious since Vatican II.
Fr: I really appreciate your effort in giving tribute to the religious
sisters. But I am worried that most people in the web are using your effort
as a tool to divide the faithfuls. Based on the articles that you shared to
us, it is very clear that the Vatican's intention is not to demean the
sisters but to make sure that the we are ALL in the same page. And I really
don't see anything wrong with that. But I am with you. We should never
forget to give thanks to them despite what the headline is.
Thank you, Father Jim, for putting into words what so many of us think and
feel. The deep disappointment at the lack of understanding of the selfless
dedication of the sisters made me think of the great sadness Jesus must
have felt on the night before His crucifixion. He knew His message of peace
and His gentle reminders of the Godliness of social justice were going
unheeded. We believe, however, that there is the new beginning of Easter.
We wait for Providence and continue to speak of Truth.
That is odd Tom, as ALL of the Franciscan Sisters I know are familiar with
the LCWR. Usually it is only the Sisters in Leadership who attend the
meetings etc.Perhaps that is why? There are 2 orgs representing American
women Religious, the LCWR represents roughly 80%.It is very pertinent & has
been very upsetting to the woman who have dedicated their life to living
the ministry of Jesus. Of course, they don't talk about there dismay much
to the laity.Quite frankly, shame on Pope Benedict.AGAIN!
At one time I was involved with a group of Franciscan nuns who are into
diverse forms of New Age practices: Reiki Healing, praying to the goddess
"Sophia," worshiping Creation rather than the Creator, etc..., They
considered Evangelization to be 'proselytizing'... Saint Francis of Assisi
told us that absolutely nothing is more important than leading people to
Christ. A balance must be struck here. Environmental issues are important,
but not nearly as important as "the Great Commission."
Yes, the sisters have done many wonderful things and we are grateful. I was
taught for 12 years by sisters and I loved them. But the LCWR is an
organization that was instituted by the Vatican and they have a right and a
duty to make sure that it is promoting authentic Catholic Church teachings.
The LCWR, like so many "catholic" colleges & universities, has lost its
catholic identity. When a catholic organization wants to look "beyond
Jesus" then it's time for the Vatican to step in.
Thanks, Fr. Jim, for this beautiful tribute to these wonderful women who
have devoted their lives to Christ and to the "least" of His brothers.
Whatever anyone thinks of the recent Vatican document on LCCR, they should
be grateful for the lives of these sisters. Thanks for your courage in
doing this advocacy, Fr. Jim. I know you get a lot of criticism for it. It
takes a lot of humility to continue that work in the face of such negative
judgement by others.
When I was a young child my aunt, who lived in Manhattan, was bed ridden.
When my 4 cousins returned home from their parish school, two Sisters of
Mercy went home with them, made dinner, helped my cousins with their
homework, got them ready for bed, and in the evening returned to their
convent. They continued until my aunt was well enough to care for the
family herself. That is doing the work of God. Thank God for our American
Religious women.
Novus Ordo convents are almost all empty. Only traditional convents where
the nuns wear full habits are flourishing. What does this say? Catholic
nuns today are ashamed to wear a religious habit--they walk around like
social activist CEOs with their earrings, makeup, done up hairdos, skirts
and miniature--microscopic "religious" pins. Of course these new nuns
belong to gyms, live in apartments, and are thoroughly secular in every
way.
This is poppycock and swiss cheese. Catholic nuns since Vatican II have
gone the way of all flesh. They threw away the religious habit; they became
secular; they developed their own Church theology and philosophy. Some of
them even became involved in the WomenPriest movement, while others used
the "Spirit of Vatican II" as an excuse to buck Tradition at every level.
These hippy Dippy Sisters without religious habits are a dying breed.
Fr., of course we should be thankful for the marvelous work of so many
sisters. But very few of them have or ever had any real connetion with
LCWR, which is very similar to a Trade Association, putting out their own
spin on things. None of the many Franciscan sisters I'm familiar with (or
with the Sr's of Life, whose order never joined the LCWR) have any
connection to them. I think you are creating an issue here which doesn't
exist.
Of course we should recognize the good of these Sisters. However, the
Vatican has a good cause to desire the doctrinal reform of women religious.
They want to take the bad and make it good, and take the good and make it
better. Wise women religious, and indeed, wise Christians everywhere, must
understand that crucibles are not punishment, but purification, and thus,
should be willing to undergo the necessary steps to be made pure.
So important for priests to verbalize support of the sisters! Thank You Fr.
Martin! I am so grateful for the Sisters of Divine Providence who imparted
their wisdom throughout my formative years in Pittsburgh, PA. and who
continue to work for justice issues for women! Also, thanks for the
reminder to write them! I hope they are bombarded with appreciation!
Many of these Orders will not be around in a few years due to no vocational
interest. Whether they have done some good is not in question, whether they
are significantly different than government social workers is in some
cases. Christ is the center of religious life, not the individuals you
serve. That is not evident in many instances.
The bishops need to look in ther back yard ASAP women do not do child
molestation, take money from ther parishes...The RC crurch is loosing so
many Religious day after day and that id sad but the bishops (Boys Club)
just make up more "BS" for us to do as they do nothing but but make more
rules for us so wake up before it's to late!
Thank you so much for this powerful, truthful acknowledgement of the
reality of American women religious. Thank you for your willingness to
stand up and stand by these women who are an example of what it means to
follow Christ. Thank you for using your voice, your position, your
reputation to honor the truth.
Fr. James Martin is probably one of the greatest priests ever produced in
America. His zeal to spread the word of Christ in a simple, humble, and
often funny way! He's also not a crazy lefty nor a crazy righty, something
becoming rare in the Church. Keep strong in the Lord, Father!

@jihadvv ..but that "3-in-1" concept is very much sensible...just as u are
also made up of Mind, Body & Spirt...even God is present in 3 persons, each
having a particular task to perform & the same characterisitcs...God the
Father Himself made His Prophets to declare the coming of Jesus...who is as
DIVINE as the Father...just coz He had sum human characteristics doesnt in
any way prove that He was not God...there r many instances to prove the
divinity of Jesus..but thatz only if u OPEN UR MIND!!
@jihadvv well....therez nuthin wrong in leading a family life...we all do
need to produce kids...but if u receive a vocation frm God to serve Him &
LOVE HIM alone...then therez nuthin to hesitate....remember, u were created
to have a personal relationship with God....and if u love the things of
this world, you do not have the love of the Father in you!! and if u've
loved ur sis, mom, dad, bro more than God..then sry..therez sumthin
wrong...its high time we open up our lives to God..!! God Bless!
@jihadvv my bro....there r many promising instances which make us
understand that Jesus IS God...and that He was crucified....otherwise
every1 including the Father Almighty wud be exposed as a fraud...if u look
at it deeply...dnt try to shun away reality...open ur heart and receive the
truth...therez no harm in doing so... just as the Bible says u wl be highly
rewarded if u seek God..u can speak to me or ne1 elze whom u rely
upon...may the Holy Ghost be with u...i promise u, if u try, u WILL!!
@jihadvv and trust me, i dnt hav nething against ne1...but there were
certain things which Prophet Muhammed preached which was 101% contrary to
the teachings of God the Father and the Bible... Jesus WAS Crucified (its a
well-attested fact)...the Father Himself made His Prophets including
Prophet Isaiah speak bout it Judas Iscariot under no circumstances replaced
Jesus on the Cross and above all, Prophet Muhammed was born almost 600yrs
after Christ...so how cud he speak so much bout him..??
When I come across stories like this, I have renewed hope for this world.
May God bless you sisters, and may he give you strength to fulfill your
vocations.
