Host Ira Glass gives a run-through of our new iPhone application's features, developed by the awesome folks at the Public Radio Exchange (//www.prx.org).
Best app in the app store IMO. $3? I almost feel guilty paying so little.
Awesome design and attention to detail, great organization of content, and
of course amazing amount of content. I highly recommend iPhone/Touch owners
jailbreak their devices, if for no other reason you can enable
backgrounding for streaming apps like this - works great. It's too bad
Apple drags their feet so much on these sort of critical features.
You know, you people at TAL constantly make me believe that everything's
actually going to be ok with the human race. I don't know if that's true or
not, but TAL (and this iPhone App!) regularly rejuvenates me and gets me
ready to go back out and face the world. Great great work...
Ira, you're a good salesman. I have had an iPhone for 2 years. This is the
very first app that I've ever purchased. I began watching the video, saying
to myself that if this app wasn't free, I wouldn't download it. I ended up
buying it while the video was still playing.
Yes, if you go, say 20 mins into the stream of a given show, it should pick
up right where you were. You can hit the lock screen to turn the screen off
and keep going. I don't think you can close the app and keep streaming (if
you don't have Backgrounder + Kirikae)
Those with the app, if you leave a podcast in the middle of the stream does
it bookmark where you left off? Also, will it continue playing if you turn
off the screen? I am so close to being sold!
I was playing with someone's iPod touch last year & told them that I would
maybe buy one if it came loaded with the entire TAL archive. I guess Steve
Jobs will be getting some money from me now.
I'm sold. The only way this can be better will be when Apple releases an
iPhone OS that allows multi-tasking, so I can listen and do other things,
and use my earbuds with pause/volume controls!
I usually wait for the podcast to come out on iTunes on Sunday to do my
gardening. One time I waited till 5PM because I can't do it without it. Now
I don't have that problem!
I'll get the app... when I get money for an iphone. I agree with the other
comment .. maybe you can make a similar app for another phone like the
android?
Good god... i bought it before the end as well.... I started off, well no,
i can just listen to the podcast and then... wth, why not! such a great
show!

So much confusion:
-First off, nobody spends more on hair than black women. That nonsense
costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars PER EXTENSION! I get a stomach
ache thinking about how many kids could have been put through college had
it not been for the weave.
-Next, Killer Mike says that white college kid should tell minorities how
to get into college. Excuse me, white college kids have no idea how to get
into college. They have rich parents who put them through school, or they
take out massive loans for Liberals Arts nonsense like idiots. Then they
complain that the world didn't take care of them, and say smart people who
make good decisions need to pay their debts. Maybe he means the kids who
studied hard and got into STEM-esque programs? Or kids who took out loans
to study something that leads to a career? Something that actually develops
skills? If he means the little, Marxist snowflakes who worship Bernie
Sanders, that is some terrible advice. Nobody should listen to them. THEY
NEED TO START LISTENING!
-On that note, the people minority children should be taking advice from
are Conservatives who live frugal and moral lives. Those are the people who
have truly found success and know what to do with this gift called life.
But I'm sure Killer Mike thinks they're racist, and the Liberals seals in
Colbert's audience would absolutely agree. It's hard to help when everyone
thinks you're a patronizing bigot before you can open your mouth.
-Stephen Colbert should be ashamed for letting a rapper "educate" him.
Killer Mike needs to listen and learn, not speak. Colbert has gone so far
to the left. He has no balls left. What a waste he is.
-And why is Killer Mike joking about his daughter fighting at school? Maybe
if he exercised and paid attention to her instead of complained about
racism, he wouldn't be having that problem. Fighting at school is not
funny.
White people aren't creating conditions that keep lots of black people in
poverty. There are different factors that create poverty including life
choices. 72% of black kids are born out of wedlock and lots of black kids
don't have fathers in their lives. 1 in 3 Black men will be incarcerated in
his life and Black men are 6% of the population but commit 50% of the
murders. We should not blame all blacks for what some do but we should
acknowledge the fact that lots of individual blacks make poor choices (like
committing crimes and leaving their kids) and those poor choices are what
keep those particular black people and their kids in poverty. White people
aren't forcing young black men to commit crimes at a higher rate than other
people and we aren't forcing lots of black men to leave their kids.
Personal choices are involved. This is another example of whites being
blamed for the personal choices of nonwhites.
+Keylor Navas I'm always puzzled by liberals who talk about the "right to choose" to kill a baby but don't support ones right to choose what do with their money or how to defend them selves. This video was another example of personal responsibility being taken away from black individuals and putting that responsibility on to whites. Whites are not causing high crime rates in black areas. Black individuals are. .
+Mandy A The left is diametrically opposed to reality. Not everyone has the same talents skills and abilities. They ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal, luck and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population. Like spoiled, angry children, they are in rebellion against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave. The liberal mind rages against imaginary villains, whines about imaginary victims, and seeks to run the lives of people competent to run their own. Leftist narrative 101 "the right to choose". In reality, their ideology is utilitarian. They don't really have principles. Abortion is about avoiding parenting, not about the right to choose as they contradict that principle in other areas of their political stance. Minimum wage, "good for workers" and "does not affect employment". In reality, they want to destroy any "evil and exploitative" job, thus contradicting themselves and creating unemployment among the poorest and less skilled. It's just a silly price floor to prevent poor people from out competing unions. Their biggest donors. Global Warming, "it's going to kill us". In reality, the 95% consensus figure never was, but a lie, and the projections exaggerate the exponential multiplicative effect of CO2 so much, absolutely nothing can be done about it. But they will push for ridiculous and useless subsidies to "green" friends and carbon taxes. Finally, there is Piketty. Piketty is basically the most used cliché narrative scapegoat the left puts in action. Everybody knows wealth inequality can't be automatically attributed to theft, and that an economy is not a game of poker where every transaction is a 0 sum game. This is not being an idiot 101. What the left is basically saying, but in a very clever way is "we are demagogues, so we are going to use catchphrases and buzz words like inequality to rise quote on quote, a point". Their point is obviously a conspiracy theory full of extraordinary and rëtarded claims. That the rich are hoarding capital and leeching off the poor. In reality, the rich are the most productive in term of what they produce and what they pay in taxes. They are the corner stone for the huge American welfare state. In reality, it's the poor who are leeching off the rich. That is why, they would never dare to take their ridiculous position to it's logical conclusion. Get rid of the rich, because they need their wealth.

Sarah Palin's linguistically acrobatic endorsement of Donald Trump wasn't fair to the rest of the candidates. So Stephen's got a Palin endorsement for everyone.
+IamNixon Its like a SNL skit isnt it? At the end they both should have faced the camera and said "Live from New York, its Saturday Night!' That would have been an incredible intro if they were both guests or something. The fact that this is real is just Jarring. Wtf are they going to do next, sing Gangam style?
+Mahmood Toorani great response and I respect that. now first off Obama created Isis even Putin knows this Putin has no respect for Obama, trump doesn't want war he was the first to say don't go into Iraq he isn't for war but he won't be as easy as Obama giving them 150 billion to the enemy trump will man up and actually use the term radical Islam which is exactly what Isis is. there's no doubt something needs to be done with Isis and Obama can't even say Isis he says isil. and another thing please tell me exactly how trump is racist? again the media makes it sound that way if mexico said America is bring crime drugs and rapist does that mean its racist to white people? and when he said a temporary band on Muslims from the USA to figure out why he hatred they fly planes in the twin towers and most terriost happen to be Muslim I think its very logic of trump to say that because Lord knows no paid politian will say a word about it. Trump is by no means racist that was all the media because they can't actually bash his policy's they can only call names and pull the race card. think about it who else could stand out like trump against the media? that's why to many he feels like our last hope, and if you really don't believe Ron Paul got cheated there is a detailed video on YouTube to exactly how he got cheated if you don't believe me please look it up. bernie may be a nice man but he doesn't have the drive trump does you can tell he is passionate about our country and loves our military more than anyone up there bernie wants more tax more government more government spending he wants gun control and much more that won't work it'll make buissnesses move away because they will get the crap taxed out of them our economy will do even worse and our debt will too. for any working middle class citizen that loves out country and respects our military an vets our greatest people idk why anyone wouldn't choose trump unless they are uninformed.
+Josh Caldwell Obama doesnt get along with other countries? I think you are wrong here. Isis is a world threat. Coming from a Muslim from an arabian country, Bahrain and I am telling you, THEY ARE A THREAT TO THE WORLD. Now, the thing is... the United States have been going into war ever since. Now, again, I am not an American citizen, but America should stop getting into wars if you want it to be "Great" again. Medias are mostly if not all dishonest, they pick and choose what topics they want. I agree. Fine. But you got Bernie Sanders... Man, I know, I know, you might say Socialism is like Communism, but America is already socialist. watch?v=0zq-2cKENOc4 mins of your life time wont kill you to see reason behind what I just said. If you want more information. Ill get it for you, I dont mind. Bernie Sanders, is the only candidate who has been honest and dedicated to his goal in making America the best country in the world. The reason behind Trump being bashed on Media, is not because its the Illuminati or shit people say to each other. Its because Trump is actually saying Racial stuff? Is this how Americans are? Racist? Really? Is this how your founding fathers believed in?Speaking of Media, Trump is ALL OVER the media. Bernie Sanders on the other hand is not..."“There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian GrayRon Paul cheated out of Presidency? I love Ron Paul, man. I respect him... ALOT!Sorry bro... but I think you have to really look into things more properly. No offense.Good luck
+Mahmood Toorani Well its many reasons I think trump is by far the most intelligent I think he is the best on trade the toughest on Isis he wants smaller government and to cut gov spending he actually wants to get along with other country's unlike Obama, he wants our veterans treated better than the illegals who in many cases vets get treated worse right now, he is self funding his campaign so no superpac or dirty money he will only do what's best for america. he is also the only candidate to stand up to the very dishonest media and win. most candidates can't beat the media and trump has done it even though they still try their hardest to attack him to convince people he would be bad even the GOP is attacking their own front runner, that should say something its because politicians are usually bought off for favors. but trump can't be bought. the media is doing everything they can to bash trump but the majority people went falling for it this time. look up " Ron Paul cheated out of presidency" and you'll see the media hates someone who actually cares about the people and doing what's right, that's why they hate trump and the same people killed JFK but trump is the media and establishments worst nightmare. he really is the peoples champ and it takes balls running for office especially when he doesn't even have to he is rich enough to never work another day in his life. so running for office like he is doing speaks volumes and he deserves it more than anyone on stage.
It would be a tragedy for the rest of the world too, you think Trump's reign of terror would only be in the US? He would fuck up the rest if the world as well
+Reptilian Bilderburgers You know whats fascinating? I heard a lot of people mention her possibly running for vp, so I went to google to type in the question to see if its been something they actually mentioned. When I typed in "Is Sarah Palin' the auto-finish thing gave me the top result on the list, and I Swear with every fiber within me---the first sentence reads..."Is Sarah Palin made of crab meat?" Go ahead. Try it. Blew me away.
+MovieViking I can only assume that she sounds less crazy in regular conversation, because he seemed to just be trying to shut her up just by focusing his mind on her really Really hard.

Looks like when the media makes an error they double down. Trump is not
perfectly correct on anything, the 5th Estate should get away from this
subject too. Here again is why you have to ignore the media on this - The
Media obviously does not attend church. At least Major Garrett, the former
FOX news reporter on CBS This Morning got it right - "Most commonly people
say 2nd Corinthians". The truth here is that in church Two Corinthians or
Second Corinthians are both used as an abbreviation for the same thing.
What the Bible says is "The Second Epistle of Paul The Apostle To The
Corinthians". Two and Second are both Abbreviations for the same thing,
often people call it the second book of Corinthians which is not exactly
correct either. It is Paul's Letter To the Corinthians. Quote from the
media is " Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump turned a Bible
reference into a laugh line at Liberty University on Monday when he
referenced “2 Corinthians” — the book of the Bible more commonly known as
“Second Corinthians.” The stumble wasn’t fatal — just indicative of,
perhaps, an unfamiliarity with the source material." The media has stumbled
here and please media, do not start quoting other Holy Books, there are
enough fanatics killing people over religion already. Please Media, get off
this subject since obviously this is "The Gospel According To The Media"
First Lesson, Abbreviations matter. If Comedian Pat Paulsen were alive, his

The Powerball drawing has reached $1.5 Billion, aka, "Stephen's $1.5 Billion" since he's definitely winning it. Subscribe To "The Late Show" Channel HERE: ...
+bob smith yes that's the biggest problem, it's practically impossible, that's not why you shouldn't do it though, you shouldn't do it because you're bound to lose money.
I think the real problem with such a plan is that there's no way to conceivably buy 300 million tickets... I'm sure no particular location that sells them has more than a few thousand probably, and if you called up the lottery company and tried to arrange some sort of personal order they would laugh at you and hang up
+bob smith seriously though, if anyone has 600 million dollars to blow and wants to make an easy 2 or 300 million, just buy 300 million tickets and guarantee you'll win the 1.5 (I'm guessing like 800mil after taxes)
I have some real picking tips:
1. Don't choose a powerball number that has been drawn during the past 5
games
2. If you are playing multiple entries, make sure your powerball numbers
for all of them are different because you aren't winning shit if you don't
get the powerball number
3. Don't choose consecutive numbers for the normal numbers
4. Don't choose more than 2 numbers from the same 10s place (ex: no more
than 2 numbers from 40-49)
5. Avoid picking more than 1 number than is divisible by 10.
6. Don't let your powerball number repeat with the normal ones.
+Dameol it's funny how there is a lottery where you could theoretically profit, if it had 100% payout with no profit or taxes(or close to 100%) and you bet heavily only on the numbers that other people pick the least eventually you'd make a profit.of course such a lottery would never exist
+BRBallin1 actually probability theory and real life, provided it's repeated enough times is over 99.99999% accurate.probability dictates that a number winning the lottery twice would happen on average once in every 292 million plays, funnily enough your chance with any given number is 1 in 292 million because that's how many numbers there are.
Ironically, BRBallin1's tips are actually correct, but not for the reasons he is stating. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 has the same chance of winning as any other combination BUT is far more likely to be picked by human beings, and so if you DID win the jackpot you would be splitting it with more people. By randomizing your picks you are more likely to have less of a split if you win and suffer no reduction in your chances.
+BRBallin1[because history has shown that it has never happened.]It hasn't happened due to the incredible number of possible combinations and the odds being 300,000,000 to 1 for any and all combinations. That however, in any way, should not be mistaken for an impossibility or even a less likely occurrence than any other result. The past does not influence or illustrate the future of a random system. Full Stop.[Theory and reality aren't the same.]Theory is a model of reality. They are built on the observable facts of reality and are only allowed to be called Theories when they prove time and again to provide accurate and unparalleled predictions. You know, unlike your powerball tips.[If it were to happen, maybe it would happen once every 100 years.]You know, I was going to point out that you're still deluding yourself - but you know - screw it. Please, use your observations of past random draws to play the lottery, and use all of your bill money to do it. Use, especially, your internet bill money.
+farmerboybill Theory and reality aren't the same. You would be better off picking a different combo of numbers than to repeat the exact same jackpot numbers from one of the past 5 or picking all consecutive numbers because history has shown that it has never happened. If it were to happen, maybe it would happen once every 100 years.
+BRBallin1 you're eliminating nothing at all, it's pure fallacy in your head, you can't eliminate anything from random, I can prove this under any example imaginable, if you think you've got an example where probability and statistics don't apply I'll be glad to show you the answer.
+BRBallin1 But you're NOT eliminating anything. Consecutive numbers are JUST AS LIKELY as any other combination. Last weeks numbers are JUST AS LIKELY as any other combination. It's a random drawing of balls from a bin. I don't know how else to explain this to you, so I'll stop trying. You're welcome to your opinion, even if it is wrong.
+Dream0Asylum i understand the "theoretical odds" but they are not a true reflection of what happens in reality if they aren't repeated millions of times. If there is a machine that randomly draws balls and there are 500 white balls and 5 black balls, the chances are that if you drew 2 of them in each drawing, there is no guarantee that even if you did 1000 drawings, that you would witness that happening just because the theoretical odds said so. So take those odds with a grain of salt. That is why I'm eliminating improbable number patterns from being drawn.
+BRBallin1 [I'm basing my advice on the frequency of occurrence and not just blind theoretical odds. ]You're basing your advise on intuition and coincidence and nothing more. Past performance is not an indicator of future performance in a random system. There's no handicapping a blind draw. These balls aren't like horses - they don't have unique attributes that make any one more likely than the others to "win."Just because you've not seen consecutive numbers win "yet" doesn't mean that it's any less likely to happen than any other combination. All combinations (including consecutive numbers) have a roughly 300,000,000:1 chance of happening.Again, past performance is not, I REPEAT - NOT, an indicator of future performance in a random system. If your argument is; "But I've been looking at previous results;" then you're deluding yourself.
Alright I'll bite. So, you spin that wheel 20 times. There is no way you can predict which one the wheel will land on. Just like lotto numbers. There is no way to increase the odds of getting the winning numbers. Yes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, p6 is extremely unlikely. It is no more unlikely than any other combination of numbers. It is no more unlikely than the exact same numbers being pulled two weeks in a row. It is pure chance that you will get the winning numbers. It's a game of chance.
+farmerboybill The theoretical odds are kind of misleading. If you spun a wheel that lands on 5 different colors, the theoretical odds are that each color has 1/5 chance. But if you spun 20 times, you will most likely get more than 4 spins for 1 or more colors. So theoretical odds should be taken with a grain of salt as a mere predictor to measure the likeliness of something happening if they were to be repeated millions of times. Since the lottery drawings have not occurred millions of times, the reality is that particular sequences like the ones I've mentioned won't occur vast majority of the time.
I see we've gotten to a point where the conversation is going to devolve into "I'm right!", "No, I'm right!". There is absolutely no way to better your odds in a lottery, but you're free to believe what you want to believe. Have a good day.
+farmerboybill It's valid advice! When was the last time a lottery had all 6 numbers being consecutive numbers? Probably never, so it's better to avoid playing consecutive numbers. I'm basing my advice on the frequency of occurrence and not just blind theoretical odds.
Here's a link to the powerball website - it shows the frequency each number is drawn during a given time period. There's no way to gain the system. //www.powerball.com/powerball/pb_frequency.asp?matrixID=5&graph=0
But your advice isn't really advice because it doesn't increase anything. It might make you feel better because you think you're gaining the system, but you're really not.Want advice for increasing your odds? Buy two tickets. Of course, this is where a problem comes in - at what point does it go from being a "fun" game to a bad habit/addiction? People who spend hundreds or thousands on tickets to increase their odds may be taking food out of the mouths of their children, may be spending the rent money, may be literally killing themselves and their families. Gambling of any form has ruined many lives. Here's the best advice - Buy 1 ticket, dream about how you'd blow the money, throw it away after it loses. If the daydreaming made you feel better, it was worth the two bucks. Repeat for the next drawing if you'd like. If it didn't make you feel better, don't buy another one.
+farmerboybill People don't care about the odds. As long as there is 1 winner each year or more that wins it all, people will buy into the idea and try their luck. My advice simply takes into account some patterns that history proved were consistently happening.
+BRBallin1 Yes, That is exactly what I am telling you. The reason the exact same numbers typically don't get picked two weeks in a row are because the there are so many possible combinations, not that last weeks numbers are less likely to be picked. You do realize you're more likely to die in a vending machine accident than you are in winning the jackpot?
+farmerboybill History shows that my tips are valid. Even though every number is THEORETICALLY equally likely, it doesn't happen that often if not at all. You mean to tell me that the lottery numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 are going to be equally likely as something like 14 27 39 52 63 05?
+BRBallin1 1. The numbers picked last week are just as likely to be picked this week as any other combination.2. You get $1m if you get all the numbers but not the powerball3. Each number has the same odds of being picked. 12345 pb6 is just as likely as any other combination4. See point 35. See point 36. See point 3It's an idiot tax. Yes, I paid my idiot tax, too. I hope I win because I'll be quoted as saying "I'm an idiot for buying this ticket, but all the other idiots just made me look like a genius" And "Hell no, I'm never buying a ticket again! I got lucky once, why would I try to two?!?"
Stephen Gets A Straight Answer Out Of Donald Rumsfeld
Stephen tries to pin down the notoriously evasive former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Subscribe To "The Late Show" Channel HERE: ...
The very last thing Stephen said bugged me: "Churchill Solitaire". It was
clearly a prop created before the show as a comedic answer to Rumsfeld's
last comment on Churchill. It desperately begs the question: if the end of
the interview was so clearly scripted, how much of the rest was scripted as
well.
+Dan Meacham 'Churchill Solitaire' is a mobile game that Rumsfeld "helped" develop. I'm assuming that's the only reason why he agreed to the interview, to promote the game. Why the hell would hell else would an 83-year old set himself up to be put on the spot like this? I assume that's why Rumsfeld tried to quote Churchill at the end, as a segue to change the conversation to focus on why he was there in the first place. Thankfully Colbert took advantage of the opportunity and made this interview into anything but a plug.
Not saying I agreed with the war, *but* to answer Colbert's question about
going to war based off 90% invalid info... Let's say they did have WMDs and
we didn't go to war, Donald would then be answering the question, "Your
intelligence - though flawed - said there was a slight chance this would
happen. Why didn't you do anything about it?"
+Al H. He's saying intelligence cannot be defined as a fact because their number one duty, at least as they see it, is not to gather intelligence, but to protect America from any and all threats using their intelligence. With so many potential threats out there, I assume they were trying to be steps ahead of the game in order to not be beat to the punch. I also think it's very likely that they were speaking to people in the region who encouraged this made-up intelligence, or even made it up.Just thought of this, but it could be possible that some of our allies over there made shit up in order to get us to invade. Then, these people blackmailed the Bush administration into covering their butts. Or promised oil as compensation.
+Al H.I agree to an extent, but there's no denying how fundamentalist Muslims want any non Muslim dead. Maybe I've just watched too many Bill Maher vids on the topic on Muslims, Sharia Law, etc./watch?v=N1OBnGuJw6k (Muslim talk starts around 3:50, but the whole video is funny yet true and worth watching)
+Rebecca The paranoia that you and I are facing today doesn't come from overseas, it's a well-thought longterm plan that was implemented and injected into the society by our very own government. Whether Bin Laden had been captured/taken down would have no significant effect on the agendas that our government is pushing forward. Remember, these are politicians, they get selected and elected to achieve short and long term agendas, and someone will benefit from them, but surely not the ordinary people.
+Al H.I'm not a fan of Bush. I just remember hearing Clinton had on good authority that he could've taken out Bin Laden when he was president. Never did, and we all know what happened on 9/11. It's hard to know which is right: being paranoid and safe OR just being careful and risking consequences on our homeland.
But that's not what occurred, is it? U.S. invaded a country based on the data the "intelligence" community had gathered, or in this case created. More than a decade later, hundreds of thousands of lives vanished, majority of the region shifting into self-destruction, and here we have this man appearing on a late night show stating that intelligence cannot be defined as a fact. Patriotism comes in different forms and colors, but defending the W. Bush administration is not one of them.
