Passenger - Life's For The Living
Passenger - Life's For The Living From the album "All The Little Lights" available on: //itunes.apple.com/gb/album/all-the-little-lights/id490717938 Lyrics: ...
I enjoy how there are comments from people saying, "This is going to be
played at my funeral" or something along those lines, when this song
clearly has nothing to do with dying or death... The song's meaning is for
you to live life to the fullest, be happy with what you are given, let
those you are close too know that you love them, and be thankful you're
alive. Don't let anything hold you back, make an impact on this world, and
truly be happy with the decisions you have made.
If the people saying "This is going to be played at my funeral" have truly
lived the life portrayed in this song... by then all means, play this song
at your funeral.
+4Ever Winter But you could use it as a way of saying that you've lived your life to the fullest and the people that are mourning your loss should continue to be happy and live life.Or a twisted sense of irony.
+Damion Monaghan Not true. Working in this field. Depression has many treatments and art is one of them. Depression in many respects is a self fulfilling prophecy, in other words if you engulf your life around depressing things, there is a good chance you will become depressed. That's why if you read these comments regarding peoples reactions, you can see people talking of their own deaths and their own funerals. While it is good to face up to the fact that we are all going to die one day, these comments are self indulgent. A sure sign of depression. This passenger guy is depressed and the people who listen to this song are picking up on his depression.
+Mr .Creosote mate, depression is a monster one can only fight with art. this song is a story you will only understand when you are on that road that just goes on and on day in and day out. that is just my opinion though. what is true about this song is that it is a piratical application of stoicism, for the most part the comfort of this society does allow many to see at all.
+Dragon Girl I am glad you didn't turn your thoughts into actions, but many would. Telling anyone especially someone who is depressed that they are better off dead for being unhappy, is a puerile and dangerous attitude. No matter what context it is used in.
+Dragon Girl If this is about the line lifes for the living so live it...I am really depressed and that line is true and i know it..If you dont live ur life u are better off dead...Its not an invitation to kill urself, but u should get what he means by it, its a metaphora :D And dont cry for the lost, and smile for the living is simply the optimistic way of looking into the direction of the future, bc looking back in a whimpsical regretful view doesnt help...Thats how i understand that song...
+Mr .Creosote I am actually very glad to read that someone agrees with what I initially ...HATED about this. However, I don't understand why that makes you think he's depressed. This conversation sounds as though people with depression were assholes or something, and like it's the ultimate insult. When I was depressed, as in thinking about offing myself (not seriously contemplating it though) and heard this I felt very hurt by this line. I felt like he was telling me that if I don't enjoy life every single fucking second I DESERVE death, and I NEVER want to hear that. I mean if even losing someone is not a "legit reason" for "bad" feelings, I am like one of the worst people in the world. When I am afraid it could be true, it hurts even more. Knowing I CAN enjoy life however, I can also enjoy the song. I actually LOVE the melody and I just overhear this line and focus on the highway part. I think if I had never been depressed, I might not have developed any understanding for how insensitive it would be to say that...how it actually hurts when you can't snap out of it. What I think is he sounds me when I was 12 and utterly convinced I could cure an anorexic class mate by telling her to eat her food already. A typical "helper" who wants to win the "battle" (in this case by shocking and "setting ultimatums") and is a little bit naive.
After reading this whole conversation, I find it safe to say that he has a way of making a song that can mean different things to different people. And that's totally okay! Like someone said, "You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they'll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons"
+Mr .Creosote I completely get where you are coming from and agree the line "Or you're better off dead" may not be best used out of context but for me I take real inspiration from this song. I'm not depressed and ok i, like everyone, have bad days, but to me this song is all about taking what you have and making your life as full as possible. I also think that "Don't cry for the lost" can also mean those who are lost to humanity ie the boy laughing at the spastic and the men in suits who all look the same as well as those dead. He is implying (to me anyway) that these people are not living their life to the full and we shouldn't cry for these people but rather smile for those living life to the full. I love how he demonstrates some of the beauty in this world in things that are not beautiful eg. rainbows in oil stains and pigeons pecking trains making sparks but then highlights how we all have new iphones and don't appreciate it. The last verse is amazing and really emphasizes how life in the 21st century is less about living your dreams and more paying off your debts. The depressing part I suppose is that it sounds like no one is following him "home" but even then he manages to be upbeat with a blanket of stars highlighting how he is still living life to the full and appreciating its beauty. Totally get how some can take this as depressing and the overall message may eb that no one truly is living anymore but it makes me want to go out there and live my life to full- or I'm better off dead....On a side not I wanna say I'm so glad you have helped those who suffer from depression- we need more people in these roles :)
+Melody C. That's because, depressed whining, whinging, false falsetto, boring excuse for a singer", "whinging whining songster", "depressed bleetings of a whining second rate songster" Is what he is. Have you never heard of criticism, or are you one of these prim oversensitive, I'm offended Liberals who writes to her MP when she sees fluffy bunny rabbits having sex. I despair I really do.
+Mr .Creosote "depressed whining, whinging, false falsetto, boring excuse for a singer", "whinging whining songster", "depressed bleetings of a whining second rate songster" Perhaps you don't think those as insults...but well, there's no use arguing with you.
+Melody C. You can kid everyone else, but you cannot kid yourself. I want this song played at my funeral, what's the point, you will only depress your relatives. .
+Mr .Creosote okay first of all, I don't know what page you mean but I don't think I've ever posted anything directly related to depression.Second, you don't like this song, fine, don't insult people.Third, what's your problem with me wanting this song on my funeral anyway?
+Bruno Bavaresco Melody C who opened this link started by saying "This song is going to be my funeral song." If you follow her pages she mentions depression many times. This whinging whining songster just appeals the depressing side of human nature. It's garbage.
+Mr .Creosote if that is ur opinion I am fine with accepting it, but u must see that this song ends up making a lot of people happy, and I hope u respect theirs and mine opinions, cause I will maintain mine, and I suppose they will do the same. Remember, none of us is the owner of truth. Everything may be false, a lie.
+Bruno Bavaresco Depressed people are always looking for comfort in depression, they do not listen to life is worth living, its part of their depression. The miserable tone of this song is banal and coupled with the lyrics, it makes for a very poor attempt at some kind of cheap philosophy
+Mr .Creosote u see, I would say that the part that says "Or u better off dead" isn't a real bad thing, cos if u think about it, no one likes the idea of dying, so its in fact a way to motivate (maybe its writen wrong?) people to be happier and enjoy life more, cos, as I said, no one likes dying. But it can be bad depending of what u think that "enjoy life" means.
+UberGamer Are you for real. The comments section on you tube exists in order to comment. You may or may not agree with my offerings, but I maintain the right to comment on a public forum. Your Fascist view makes you a very hateful and vile human being, but then again that's what I would expect from someone who titles himself 'Uber' or should it be Ubermensch
+Mr .Creosote Really unneeded, it's nice to share an opinion, but you don't have to slander other opinions. Insulting the talent of a singer doesn't make you more talented, so keep insults to yourself.kindly,everyone.
+The Doctor I think your reply is perhaps an indicator of your moral compass, you said " if your going to be depressed your better off dead" Now can you see the effect this mans whining voice has had on you. Either that or you have absolutely no idea of how depressed people feel. So come on, you can do better than that. Start spreading some happiness in the world, not succumbing to the depressed bleetings of a whining second rate songster.
+Mr .Creosote i believe it is a song of joy and moving on i think the message here is don't cry when someone dies remember them and smile and keep on moving past the pain and if your going to be depressed your better off dead because that's not the point of life
+Mr .Creosote The more I try I can't find this song any thing other than motivational for start enjoying life."Oh hell with this place, i'll go it my own wayI'll stick out my thumb and trudge down the highwaySomeday someone must be going my way homeTill then i'll make my bed from a disused carWith a matress of leaves and a blanket of starsAnd i'll stitch the words into my heart with a needle and thread"Specially these verses make me kinda want to leave all the pain and bad moments behind and enjoy nature as it is.
+Mr .Creosote No need to assume. Everyone is entitled to feel whatever they want about this song and state their opinions, yeah, but just so you know, not everyone who likes this song is revelling in misery, depressed or unhappy. I agree that the line "you'd better off dead" is a bit...unnerving. I wouldn't have written that line into the song if I were Michael Rosenberg. But still I like this song, not because of the line, but because of all other beautiful lyrics and the music itself. When I say I'd like to have it played at my funeral, it seems like it caused some misunderstanding. I meant that I want people to be aware of the amazing world around them, live their lives to the fullest and not grieve over my inevitable death. Still, people can feel whatever they want, and if crying for the lost is their way to deal with lost, I'm not against it. Also, if my comment about funeral and stuff has upset anybody, just give me a heads up, I'll delete it because it's not the effect I want to have on people.
+Olz Whit Yes, cannot disagree, sometimes melancholy is a natural state of mind. Just bring awareness to it. The trouble is you can overload on this stuff, I worked in mental health and depressed people tend to revel in depression. I cannot see how anyone finds this stimulating, but that's personal choice. But he's definitely depressed.
+Mr .Creosote Sometimes you need to listen to something depressing...when im in a melancholy mood this is what id listen to by choice. but I agree hes depressed
+Michael A Yes I agree, I can only think that anyone who listens and likes this song is somehow revelling in misery, depressed and unhappy. So you get a thumbs up from me. Melody Chen even commented that she wants this played at her funeral, so no prizes for guessing the effect this depressing, dreary, whining song has had on her and the 15 thumbs up people.
+Jay Léa Imagine you have just lost a relative and someone says "Life’s for the living so live it.Or you’re better off dead".There are many people in crisis from, prisoners, the bereaved, those in debt, the unemployed, refugees, terminally ill. Can you honestly tell me that if came across someone threatening to commit suicide that you would say to them in any context, YOU ARE BETTER OFF DEAD, couple that with this guys depressed whining voice and its a recipe for misery. There are many people who need to cry for the lost, its the way we humans heal ourselves. Perhaps you have never lost anyone. THIS BLOKE IS DEPRESSED.
+Mr .Creosote How is it dreadful? I think the message is a hopeful one on the contrary. "Don't cry for the lost, smile for the living" I really can't see how you turned that into a depressive song...
Yeah, I agree that part of the lyrics could be better, but as a whole, I think it's beautiful, both the music and the lyrics. To each his/her own, I guess. I'll check Bob Dylan out, though.
This guy sings as if he is severely depressed, although there's a certain harmony, there doesn't seem to be any joy or happiness in his music."Get what you need and give what you’re givenLife’s for the living so live itOr you’re better off dead"What dreadful lyrics, try telling this to someone in crisis, this guy is no Bob Dylan.
