Very smart analysis. The DSM's removal (and refusal to expand) the bereavement clause is almost comical in light of the evidence presented.

Interesting that the onset peaks in early 20's and it is also interesting that the recovery rate is high. If peope can get the help they need recovery is possible.

+Regina Ames It is exciting to think that as counselors we can hopefully help facilitate the recovery process.

I was so happy to see the recovery statistics. I did not realize that recovery rates were so high with treatment. I also found it very interesting that females are more likely to attmept suicide but are less likely to commit suicide. I think this goes back to the way females attempt sucicide verses the way males do. I think Dr. Grande did a great job explaining MDD.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Mandy Moore I agree. Dr. Grande did a good job explaining MDD. Hearing the facts of this disorder was interesting.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Mandy Moore I also liked the fact that the recovery rates were high with treatment. MDD is very prevalent so it is good to know there are options for people to recover.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
I was pleasantly surprised at the recovery statistics. I also liked Dr. Grande's comment about sadness. I think it's important to keep in mind that sadness is a natural, human emotion expected to be experiences by everyone. We should be careful not to be too eager to read into any one symptom, sadness included, as meeting criteria for any disorder. We may get mired in symptom checklists with the intention of helping our patients. I'll certainly keep this in mind.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Mandy Moore I agree we must remember that saddness is a part of life and dose not have to be depression
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pzsvJ3zECqg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAV4/8W9HMw7r5HE/photo.jpg?sz=64
I too was pleaseantly surprised by the recovery statistics. I also think that Dr. Grande made a great point at rememebering that saddness is a part of life. Just being sad doesn't mean you are depressed. Even though we use those words interchangably.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
This was a great video. What was interesting to me was that due to the chronicity of depressive symptoms there is an increase in the likelihood that a person can develop a personality disorder.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Danielle Maldonado I was surprised that depressive symptoms could increase the likelihood of a personality disorder.  I found it interesting that the suicidal attempts in women were high, but completion was low.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Danielle Maldonado I agree! The likelihood of anxiety and/or substance abuse disorders makes sense but I too found it interesting that personality disorders are common.

Major Depressive Disorder seems to be diagnosed often in the field, and it almost seems to be a "go to" diagnosis. I think I was most intrigued by the comorbidity. A lot of other disorders can exist with MDD. I can understand how they could go together because a person's mood can be altered by dealing with the symptoms of their other disorder, such as OCD or Panic Disorder.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--pPc0i9bZ2w/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABE/GFW7AVdGZvc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Rachel Foster I agree that MDD can be the "fall back" diagnosis when someone doesn't truly understand that disorder or didn't listen to the client. I like how Dr. Grande explained in class that it's not just when someone feels sad, but more depressed that the person has ever felt ever.

This video helped me to better understand Major Depressive Disorder and why taking careful measures to learn about a person's history is important before diagnosing. I also found it interesting that females are 1.5 to 3 times more likely than males to be diagnosed with this disorder.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Candace Fernandez Yes, the statistics are very interesting for this disorder. I always had this idea that men were more likely to have this illness. I guess not!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
The statistics are interesting here for this disorder. The frequency in females verses males.

Do you think that the DSM-5, with all of its new categories stemming from previous diagnosis of mental disorders, is pandering to the insurance companies as well?
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-JgiXLOMFYz0/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAn8/jybnUXxAK0I/photo.jpg?sz=64
I don't really understand your question. A DSM diagnosis is required for any insurance claim for mental health treatment.I wouldn't say that panders to the insurance companies really. It's just how the system was set up. Unfortunately, this means that if you go see a psychiatrists and you have insurance,  you will leave with a DSM label, whether you need one or not, because without the official diagnosis, no insurance money will be paid.
