Idler Pulley Removal and Replacement - (aka tensioner pulley) Subaru Legacy GT and WRX
This was very easy. I am not a mechanic and this only took me 30 minutes. I would put the complexity not far above doing an oil change. Sorry that I mostly talk in ...
I have an 02 wrx and it has a boost guage. Im gonna replace the pulley
tomorrow but that probally wont fix my lack of performance. My CE light
isn't even on so its hard to say what it could be. Somtimes when i go into
first, it almost feels like it misfires and takes off but without as much
pull. It's only sometimes though. Not really sure what to do. Maybe i
should just take it in to get it checked by a tech
Hi. A bad pulley would not cause a noticeable drop in performance. If it
did the bearing would heat up and melt and you would know all about it. I
have had loss in performance in my car due to the knock sensor, low octane
fuel, 02 sensor. Being a highly strung turbo the computer is pretty fussy.
If you dont have a boost gauge, get one. This will tell you a lot about
what is going on.
I just took out the idler arm pulley on my 2002 Impreza Outback Sport with
2.5 l engine. Even though it's a different engine from yours, the idler
arm assembly adjustments and removal is very similar and your video was
helpful, thank you. I'm running with the idler pulley and belt removed now
while I track down a replacement - only loss of functionality is the AC.
Hey John, thanks for the video. I am not a mechanic either but between
your video and talking on the phone with my best friend (who is a mechanic,
but lives 4 states away) I was able to replace my idle pulley on 2002 wrx
wagon. A very simple job and saved me about 80-100$. The part was 32$.
So thanks!
U.S. 2003 Outback Impreza, same belt covers, same idler pulley, same pulley
assembly arm to tension down the pulley, everything was the same. Thanks
for the video, guessing I saved about $250 from going to even the cheapest
mechanic
I have the same problem, but did you lose any performance when you drove
the car before you replaced it? I kinda feel that with mine. I'm just not
one hundred percent sure it's cause of the faulty pulley. Great
instructional video man!
This is the first instructional repair video I have ever found featuring a
JDM twin turbo TA-BH5, either in English or Japanese; I have the exact same
car and would love to see more videos like this!
My 04 wrx is making that same noise the whine.. And it gets louder when you
rev.. I hope its the Idler pulley and not the Timing belt tensioner.. Even
though I have already had the timing belt replaced
Subaru WRX STi idler pulley ac bearing air conditions belt serpentine
If your idler pulley for the air con serpentine or drive belt bearing is wearing it can start making a squealing sound. Several auto stores sell just the Pulley instead ...
@Manny C sounds like you have some rust. Try a breaker bar and 12 mm socket
, I had mine already loose when the video shows me use a wrench. It was on
there , it's not that easy as in the video. The wrench gave me more camera
room. Check my other video on this as well , I made a video for the a WRX
,it's the same procedure better camera.
I ended up stripping out the nut, so I took the whole bracket off. I took an 11mm socket and a hammer and smashed it on to the 12mm nut. LMAO I was able to get it off no problem after that. Other than that part it was no problem, thanks for the video.

A/C idler pulley noise on 2005 Subaru sti
A/C Idler pulley is on its way out. Noisy little bugger.
Replaced this part on my car, this was the same sound, scared me, thanks
for the post!
I found a good video with details on replacing it here:

Subaru WRX Replace Idler Pulley and the AC Belt
I know this video is sloppy but it gets the job done. If you are adjusting the idler pulley MAKE SURE YOU LOOSEN the bolt that holds the pulley on or the plastic ...
I dunno, its dumb. I think they may have made it plastic to cut down on
weight or something. I believe you can just buy the plastic part from the
dealership though instead of buying the whole assembly.
I noticed that part of the old pulley is melted to the washer-bolt piece
too. Were you able to get this off or did you just put it back together
like that?
I just pulled mine off it spins decently but I do hear the similar noise
when I spin it.. I put the altenator belt back on and started it the car
Doesn't whine with the ac belt off which makes me thing the idler pulley is
bad.. The ac spins...
