YF06NJY - Very Close Pass (Metro Private Hire)
Nothing to say, really. Just an ignorant bad driver. I will speak to the company. I have used Metro quite a bit in the past, but won't any more. Location: Blackburn ...
As a cyclist myself I would not ride in the middle of the inner lane on a 2
car bredth carrageway and I would have been more aware on what was
approaching from behind (rule 67 paragraph 3 of the hughway code - be aware
of traffic coming up behind you) I would have also moved over as the other
cyclist did (he also had to enter the second lane to overtake yourself) as
soon as possible to the nearside of the road as this junction at Tramways
on Blackburn road is very busy at all times. set up? hmm.
@neil5151 You should read the book "Cyclecraft", which is the recommended
reading for the Bikeability training course. NEVER wait at traffic lights
on the inside of the left hand lane at a crossroads. You will get cut up by
left turning vehicles. In order to obey HC rule 163, a vehicle would have
to move to the 2nd lane to overtake a cyclist safely there. In any case,
the 2nd lane was empty when he passed, but he was too lazy to turn the
steering wheel a little bit. ... cont'd
@neil5151 Ah, apologies, I thought you were giving advice rather than just
randomly making statements about your own cycling on here. In that case, I
was pointing out that, in contrast to your own practice, I take heed of the
advice that is given in the national cycle training scheme. I make my
judgement of the driver on the evidence available to me. Now, what exactly
did you mean by "set up? hmm." I have posted a longer version to show
events leading up to this.
@MrGrumpycyclist Please read my statement correctly and comment without
false allegations, there is no advice given.... it is what I would have
done in your situation. As you stated in another comment you held the
inside lane for a considerably long amount of time even when you were past
the junction. But hey I am allowed my opinion and thats what I gave. So you
know the driver to call him/her an idiot? have you had a conflict of
interest before ??
It seems a bit unfair not to use Metro when one of their customers drives
badly. They have no control over how people who hire their cars drive. It's
a bit like saying you won't shop at Tesco because one of their customers
cut you up when leaving the parking lot. Unless of course, I have it
totally wrong and the cars covered in signage are company cars used by
staff.
@neil5151 ... cont'd When the inside lane of two is not wide enough to
share safely (and it isn't), you should claim the lane to stop idio5ts
trying to make unsafe overtakes. If you are going to give advice, at least
make sure you know what you are talking about. Incidentally, the driver
overtook the cyclist in front too close anyway, because the driver is an
idiot.
very bad pass. i seem to observe taxis driving in a macho way quite alot -
tail-gating, close passes - driving like primary school children would if
they were allowed to drive. but i'm a bit uncomfortable with describing bad
passes as "punishment passes". unless you have a history with the vehicle
it's pretty hard to know the motivation for the bad driving.
@arushandapushand I suspect he was angry because I held the inside lane for
some distance as there was not room to pass safely. Given the amount of
space available to his right, I can think of no other reason for his
action. However, I will change the title anyway.
@neil5151 Oh, and have a look at this evening's video v=ykSZsv0VNPE for an
illustration of why it is important to claim the inside lane in these
circumstances. In that case, I didn't manage to.

Stop wasting police time, you are just being in wrong just as much half the
time. Why not not pull forward slightly? you stop before the turn. the
van was wrong in not pulling over enough, but so were you. in stopping
before the turn. and not pulling over more, when car turns, they don't
stop directly in middle of lane.
+Woo Woo The police agree with me and have issued the driver with a warning under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 (//www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2002/30/section/59).
That is a particularly nasty place to have to make a right turn, with two
lanes of traffic each way. Is there any alternative route that would avoid
having to make that manoeuvre, rather than relying on the good manners and
alertness of all the other road users to allow you to make that turn
safely.
This IS my alternative route, to avoid riding uphill across a nasty 5-way major junction further on. There is another alternative but it involves a very steep hill (~25% I think) and a 40mph 4 lane major road.
