Got ya... I close up my mac when not in use. I'm assuming it would have to be turned on and ready for the server to be identified by the apple tv plex app

+vinviper Yes it would. That is why I switched to a network drive so I can dump my media there, and always have access. No computer necessary!

OK thanks ! If I were to make a plex server on my mac, would I be better off just using the plex apple tv 4 app then instead of vlc?

+vinviper I like Plex and think it looks better. I think VLC is better for the browser sharing. Say you just had a video you want to drop on to your apple TV. Especially since it caches and stores it locally. Plex is probably for a persistent server that is always on.

+vinviper I would say make sure you have file sharing turned on in your sharing preferences. You can also use a UPnP DLNA type server like many of these (//apple.stackexchange.com/questions/335/how-can-i-make-my-mac-a-dlna-server-and-or-client)Plex is probably a nice easy one that works well!

When it discovers my Laptop on my network... Which folder is it defaulting to look at? Just says Empty Folder.

It usually is looking at a public folder. When I discover my Mac on a network, and transfer files, it will show up in the public folder under my username.

+Amaz3ments Different people handle it different ways. I use iFlicks to package them in iTunes friendly formats as well as add all the meta data. Some people either have their files in incompatible formats and don't know how/unwilling to convert them, others store all their media on a network drive and don't have a desktop to stream from. This way they don't need a computer as a media server. they can pick up a network drive and play straight from there!
