I'm in California and have never blanketed my horses a day their life. We get pretty warm winters-- compared to the rest of the country-- and even though there isn't a shelter and my mares are outside 24/7, the only thing I do is increase their hay ration and give the occasional scoop of grain and they do perfectly fine. Just yesterday it was about 60 degrees outside and these poor horses I passed by on the way home had these blankets on. I just shook my head. It astonishes me how people think it's okay to leave the blankets on during the day! We don't even have rain!! let alone snow!! Seriously... drives me crazy.

+Malia Garza I'm from Cali too. When I'm cleaning out his paddock in winter I'm always happy my horse follows me because when it gets too cold I can hug up to him and warm up a bit. lol barn witch story... at a barn I was at this lady kept wearing me down about buying a blanket for my horse or bringing him at night. He was pasture boarded with this old cowboy's quarter horse and both of them drove her crazy but mine moreso because he's a Thoroughbred and they "can't grow winter coats". One day she calls me all upset because it got "REALLY REALLY" cold so goes out there, catches MY horse and blankets him. Come morning she got out there and my horse had chewed it off and dragged it through the field (Good boy!!). Now she wants me to pay for her $200 blanket! HA! If you had minded your own business you'd wouldn't be out now would you?

+Ellen Cormier  NEWS FLASH: People are NOT horses  and horses are NOT people.  Until you start eating hay all day and sleeping only two hours a day, try not to think you are a horse, and try thinking like a horse.

My gelding is 26 and can't keep on weight. I feed him grain 3 times a day and he's on pasture with hay 24/7. If it's bellow 30 should I put a blanket on him? Thanks
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-niTmVw0ekSo/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAACM/BwHtiV86j_g/photo.jpg?sz=64
+kristi preuss you should not use grain to add weight, you need better quality hay for weight.

love your video and agree!! that said we are getting weather to -5-- do you still agree with your point - we have a nice barn (should i try to heat it)-- looking at even -15f in the near future----I wont do a blanket but should i keep them in the barn and/or try to heat them - any input would be appreciated

there choice, leave barn so they can come and go, if you heat it they will get too hot and stand in the cold, just a place to get our of wind, food in the belly and fresh water.

my dog loves the snow (her fur isnt wicked thick either) and she'll stay out all day if she wanted to! dogs dont wear coats!(except for those 6 inch dogs that aren't even real dogs...) so horses don't need them either!

+2121princesse You're welcome :) I agree; it is hard to find a good pet jacket, even finding a good fit is a challenge.

+Cobbleshoes Elfwood Thanks, for the recommendation, I'll check it out. You know, the quality of the jackets at PetSmart and Petco are pretty bad, and especially for their price.

+2121princesse Sounds like a good idea about the coat. When dogs get older they need different care just like with people. Often older people feel the cold more and you see them in shawls and sweaters. When an animal or person are older, accomodations have to be made. Some people treat an old dog just like a young dog and to me, that is cruel, like people who are impatient when an older person is using a walker and snap, "Speed up granny"; like the old lady likes walking slowly. She just doesn't want to fall and break her hip. There is an excellent place that sells dogs coats called, "Chilly Dogs" and it delivers all over the world though it is a Canadian company. Or if you are handy at sewing, you can make your own. :)

My dog requires a jacket this year for the first time ever, even though she's a spitz, she's 13 and doesn't like to eat so she's always pretty skinny, she used to sleep in 0 degree F weather for hours when she was young, but her age/metabolism just isn't enough anymore. I didn't think dogs like her needed jacket ever, but shivering after 30 seconds in 15 degree F weather proved me wrong :/ Plus, there are hairless dogs, although I'm not sure why you'd own one if you lived in a cold climate in the first place.

With regards to dogs and cold, I think it depends on where you live and it depends on the dog. If it is -30 degress celcius (or -22 F), like it is in Canada often, it would be cruel to leave the dog outside all day if he didn't have a heated dog house. All dogs are real dogs to somebody.
