+Balet Liberec The Shanti Mantras or "Peace Mantras" are Hindu prayers for Peace (Shanti) from the Vedas. Generally they are recited at the beginning and end of religious rituals and discourses.Shanti Mantras are found in Upanishads, where they are invoked in the beginning of some topics of Upanishads. They are supposed to calm the mind of the reciter and environment around him/her. Reciting them is also believed to be removing any obstacles for the task being started.Shanti Mantras always end with three utterances of word "Shanti" which means "Peace". The Reason for uttering three times is for calming and removing obstacles in three realms which are:"Physical" or Adhi-Bhautika,"Divine" or Adhi-Daivika and"Internal" or AdhyaatmikaAccording to the scriptures of Hinduism sources of obstacles and troubles lie in these three realms.Physical or Adhi-Bhautika realm can be source of troubles/obstacles coming from external world, such as from wild animals, people, natural calamities etc.Divine or Adhi-Daivika realm can be source of troubles/obstacles coming from extra-sensory world of spirits, ghosts, deities, demigods/angels etc.Internal or Adhyaatmika realm is source of troubles/obstacles arising out of one's own body and mind, such as pain, diseases, laziness, absent-mindedness etc. These are called "Tapa-Traya" or three classes of troubles. When Shanti mantras are recited, obstacles from these realms are believed to be pacified.

I do other mantras but just found this. It's a bit too upbeat for me to
chant, and I don't get the image which looks like a young woman with a
prehensile nose like an elephant.
It is the Hindu God Ganesh. He is considered to be the remover of obstacles, patron of arts and sciences and of letters and learning, and the deva of intellect and wisdom- so sayeth wikipedia. There is a story behind how Ganesh ( a boy ) acquired his elephant head after having it chopped off by Lord Shiva.

In the Plaform Sutra of Hui-Neng it says that Meditation and Wisdom are the
same. I have also heard that meditation is a noun not a verb as such, you
would enter a practice of meditation and not "do it". The natural state of
mind.
Can't help but observe that if I'd ever found myself in the position of
having to try to talk some sense to a group of yahoos such as this . . .
I'd likely have taken to heavy drinking myself.
a lot of useless blablá for such a simple thing like observing the breath.
He has a horrible voice, all in the throat. He never did any real breathing
exercises.

+joanofarc33 people don't understand that this singing makes vibrations that have actual, physical effects on the brain and body. you don't have to understand the language for it to have an effect. it's how language is supposed to be.these monks are some of the best humans on the planet. their chants and prayers are the opposite of disturbing.
Yeah, I know........But it's kinda like life, and like life, if you hang in there, it gets better. Let this music wash over you. "If you can stand in the doorway to your tent, and let the winds of life blow thru without being moved, you are truly in the center of life." (Attributed to Lao Tsu)
