Folic Acid - Foodskey
What is Folic Acid? Why do many people eat it without realising? And why is it recommended for pregnant women? Here we speak with expert Simon ...
@foodskey Before supplements, people would actually live with deficiencies.
Generations have, in fact, lived short and unpleasant lives because of
nutrient deficiencies. They still do in much of the less developed parts of
the world, and even in some of the developed parts. Supplements were
originally intended for the poor anyway, who at the time of their
invention, couldn't get affordable access to refrigeration and food
distribution. If they could get access to enough food in the first place.
@jackprat17 Clever question. I think the reason we turned to such
supplements is because modern diets are basically unhealthy (our ancestors
ate vegetables, not pizza and burgers). The fruits and vegetables we get in
grocery stores are not as healthy as the fresh and naturally grown. The
meat quality nowadays is incomparable to what people ate, say, before WW2 -
now it's mostly water and grease with red dye. On top of it all, we don't
get enough exercise. No wonder we need pills for everything.
In the year 2012, it is disgusting to think that woman do not get diet
information; and given special diety advice. We have so many children born
dead, or with severe disabilities every day. To not get people to take some
considerations into place is child abuse of the unborn, and abuse of the
woman who has to have the health affects as a result also. It makes me far
sicker when so many woman smoke while pregnant. I don't even think that
pregnant females should have tea or coffee.
@jackprat17 The fact is that for most of our history we were eating much
higher quality food. Most modern fruit and vegetables have been highly
bread so they contain more sugar and less of the bitter chemicals that
contain a lot of the micronutrients. Add to that most of us dont eat offal
any more, even burgers are made from stake these days. And finally a good
chunk of our diet is made up of white flower. If we ate like our ancestors
then we probably wouldn't need supplements.
I do not like the fact that is added to flour and there is no simple flower
available. Here in Canada the flour contains (added) not just Folic Acid
but also Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid,
Alpha Amylase. Of course there is no indication of how much of this
elements is present in the flower. There were a couple of recalls not long
ago because there was to much Iron in the flower so much that you can see
by checking the color :).
@jackprat17 Actually the human race has not been surviving terribly well on
food alone for thousands of years. Even as recently as 1900 the death rate
among young infants was around 15% (deaths before age 1) with a high
proportion of infants failing to get through the first month after birth.
Congenital defects were rife, undetectable and unavoidable. We are now
fortunate to be able to intervene in a simple and non-harmful manner. Prof

You are right that with a balanced diet, we shouldn't need any supplements
to be healthy. However, remember that not all (if not, most) do not sustain
a healthy diet, and many are too poor to do so. So adding folic acid in
flour, Vitamin D in milk or iodine in salt only prevents disease that would
not happen in any situation except for deficiency. In other words, adding
vitamins to basic food does not weaken the collective human genome.
@jackprat17 Its not survival of the fittest, its survival of the most
reproductive. We are very well built to age to thirty, but it takes much
more than that to live to the ripe old age we have been able to accomplish
thanks to techmology. Folic acid enrichment is by no means a necessity, yet
rather a simple way to keep us going. See iodized salt and cretinism.
Chemistry FTW!
I don't want to ignore the research, but I think we will discover a lot
more necessary supplements we need if we keep eating what's normal to eat
now. It might be better if research (and gov) would be much more focused on
what we have been eating forever before industrialization, to find out why
certain nutrients are missing. And then improve with science:)
It's all about the money. None of that crap is really good for you, but
it's better than what some people eat normally. Big chem companies love to
find out about some new stuff that's supposed to be healthy, so they can
pursuade govnments to pass a law to put it in everything.. instead of
fixing the problem that people have really bad eating habits.
@jackprat17 we lived shorter lives, children with horrible disfigurements
often died during birth as did many women. the healthy survived and that's
why you don't see many historic calls for supplements. as technology
advanced removing the survival of the fittest from our species we are
starting to see the need to supplement our shortcomings
Just remember how long our average life expectancy is now. Before
supplements, balanced diets, foods and waters fortified with different
things, we had a wide range of health issues and people would be lucky if
they made it to 40. This is partial due to modern health care, and also the
availability of foods and nutrients.
@foodskey IMHO the video could be longer without any issue. I would have
liked to see/hear a bit more. 3 minutes is a bit short (BTW, fun stopping
it at 3:14) If there is material that would be worth showing for 5-10
minutes, cutting it off at 3 just to make it shorter makes little sense to
me.
I'm glad we can agree on that:) If you want to speed up the progress, or
find out about other cost effective solutions to supplement food from the
store you might wanna check out the 'growingyourgreens' channel. If you
like it, spread the word:)
"You'd have to consume something like nine portions of sprouts, which is
beyond the capacity of any normal person to do". Comsuming ONE portion of
sprouts is beyond the capacity of any normal person. Emphasis on NORMAL.
Most of the B Vitamins are used in creation of enzymes and co-enzymes
necessary for both Carbohydrate and Lipid Metabolism and very loosely amino
metabolism since they are all some what linked via Actyl-Coa stage.
How is it that the "required" amount of a nutrient could outstrip a human's
ability to consume that nutrient from natural sources? I mean,
evolutionarily, that just doesn't make sense. :/
@jackprat17 Because we can, and because it is proven to be beneficial. What
makes that so hard to grasp? There's a reason why the average life span was
considerably lower 1000 years ago.
We survived for less time. We haven't always been able to live to over 100
years old! That's what a lot of the "do this, but don't do that" is about.
Simply put, anyways.
I happen to like brussels sprouts, especially when roasted, sprinkle some
salt and pepper, maybe lightly cover with a lemon sauce...quite delicious,
actually :)
@jackprat17 ha ha... I asked the same question... what happened before
supplements, etc.... but we cut it to make the video shorter... :)

Thanks for sharing this... I've been taking a prescription prenatal. It's
called DuetDHA. It's pretty expenive, so I might need to look into these
vitamins to see if they're a little more cost effective. BTW, I love you

Thanks gal! Yeah...prednisone is supposed to help if you have an overactive
immune system. I would give anything if this protocol works!! We shall see!
