Why did they not call them antibacterials or something more descriptive for
the layman instead of antibiotics? Like how the called antiviral meds
antivirals?
WHO just released a study that discusses antimicrobial resistance and focuses on antibiotics. It's over 200 pages, but an informative read if you're interested. //www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2014/amr-report/en/
Yes, there are bacteria with natural immunity that survive antibiotic treatment which then proliferate in the absence of competition and you have an emergent antibiotic resistant strain. It is misleading to say antibiotics 'make' the resistance strains. They already existed but antibiotics place positive selective pressures on resistance genes allowing them to dominate.
talk about antibiotics, birthplan, singing, fear of labour....

How Much Good Is Antibacterial Soap Doing You?

This was a very informal video for me. I use antibacterial soap all the
time and have been told to use it all my life. This totally changes my view
on the use of antibacterial soap and will be switching to normal hand soap.
All the research and findings that this video includes is an overwhelming
amount to prove that antibacterial soap is a wasted of time. I hope that
the FDA does impose that all these companies remove their lines of
antibacterial soap because it is giving people the wrong impression. Like
the video says most of the illness caused in the U.S. is by viruses not
bacteria, so all this research going into antibacterial soap is a waste of
time and money. Yet again another example of how we have our focus on the
wrong issue that are going on in the world today. I'm so glad I watched
this video and urge everyone to do so and take in its message.
+A. Z.Working sometimes is better than not working at all. Also doctors don't care if it doesn't work. It is called theater security and is the main point of the TSA. It is why people think the TSA is good for something. Doctors also want people to think they are good so they use antibacterial soap because people think it is useful.TL;DR They sometimes kill bacteria and people think they kill bacteria
+Erik Holtrop Dude seriously have you even watched the video. At 1:06 he says that shit doesn't work, that's the reason I ask..."If it doesn't work, why do hospitals use it?" That's my question. So please, unless you can actually give a meaningful answer, don't respond.
I got a question: what if I go to the batroom at some place, take a number
in there, and got to wash my hand and there is antibacterial soap or some
hand sanitizer. What is the best option?
+kath davidI am not speaking about buying that stuff, but about public toilet ;) Often, the idiots in charge, for some reasons that escape me, put antibacterial soap at the sink and hand sanitizer at the door.If I take a shit in there (that happen), what is the best solution to wash my hands and get out of there?Of course, I would not buy that soap for myself. I will have hand sanitizer once in a while, but this is because I sometime finish to walk for 5 hours in a day and that's a temporary fix when there is no public batroom around...
+therryd I don't think you understand what you're asking yourself, it doesn't point at a balance of risk and benefits ( your words not mine) the man couldn't make it any clearer, save yourself a few quid and don't buy it
+kath davidDid you understood what I was asking? The video does point at a balance of risk and benefits, and say that anti-bacterial soap does not bring benefits, and increase the risk of antibiotic resistance.Yet, hand sanitizer (stuff like purel) is also pretty shitty. compared to normal soap, does not bring real benefits except if you are in the situation like shaking hands at the funeral house for hours or working in an hospital, and bring some risk due to cross contamination of foods and also get into water (creating small issue)...But getting out of the bathroom without a good hand cleaning after getting a doosy out... Is not really great eather. No real benefits in just using water, but no real risk as well.Kind of a catch-22.
