Gibby Haynes & Daniel Johnston
The acid interview...was Daniel Johnston mad or was his world just maddening? This is an extra from "The Devil and Daniel Johnston". If you haven't seen it, ...
Appreciate Gibby Haynes nonjudgmental approach here. Johnston is a totally
endearing person, even with the paranoia. Much of what he says--about
people being programmed by popular culture, for example--is not at all off
base.
And I feel that, on some level, his parents (mother) did this to him, made
him lapse into paranoia instead of confronting her spiritual brutalization
of his childhood self.
+Chris “Cristobal” Smith Hmm, I would say it feels like paranoia because he's not grounded but it doesn't exactly mean he's incorrect. Usually people call one paranoid to discredit them because paranoia is a false perception. When I had my first lsd trip(and last, because I don't need it) it was wonderful. It wasn't that much but I by nature amplified it. My well experienced with lsd friend was freaking out and asked me if we have souls(people in general), and as soon as I said "yeah, of course we do", wwham! we had a telepathic vision of the void full of radiating orbs of light. Check out the album cover art to 'Wavering Radiant', very close to that. As we came back down, we didn't feel like watching the Celtics game because we didn't want to watch TV, not out of paranoia but because this divine feeling was projected through us we were intuitively aware of such falseness and the trickery in this world. Be seeing you :)
Well, okay, but that is exactly what the man wrote. But it is okay, he just didn't know. And yes, Daniel was terrified. He believed that the final battle between good and evil had begun with himself as the pivotal figure, and that his efforts had been corrupted. The innocent child leading the horned beast: Walking the Cow.
+badlydrawnfrogNot saying his family is anything like the characters in "Deliverance." Not sure how that came through in what I said. It seems to me, though, that rigid Christian upbringings with emphasis on the eternal punishment of "hell" can cause irreparable damage to some (or even, many) people, especially those with a certain type of brain biology, one that obsesses and worries. I am also not saying that his parents were not well meaning or did not make great sacrifices. That makes things even more complicated, in my opinion, as it always is when this type of things occurs.
Having grown up in Eastern Texas I think I have seen 'deliverance' in person and Daniel's family don't qualify. These are educated, caring people who have made great sacrifices to help Daniel in spite of the bizarre circus.
+Chris “Cristobal” Smith gibby had a very strong psych and sense of self, he could handle acid. as for daniel he shouldve never done it, he had an undiagnosed illness so noone should ever blame him for it. you could blame his parents, but they were christian west virginia white trash in the late 50s, real deliverance shit, then they moved to texas, how appropriate, daniel had schizophrenia, they concluded that he was just a "slacker" and he liked it that way, i would probably crash my fathers plane thinking i was casper if i was in that situation too.
i've been like this before i've got bipolar, i was basically like daniel in
this video for several months before i collapsed into a terrible
depression, during the manic high it's fine and fun but eventually you
start getting freaked out by what ur saying
+harmonica guitar Then you get it, i thought they were phases, my confidence was great, i felt high on life, i was the man, things were awesome, time flies no sleep paranoid bags under my eyes talking a mile a minute and crash lying in bed for months - watch him live in '1988 on here part 1 adn 2 he has a breakdown on stage
