Archae-Facts: Celsus' Cure for Cataracts...
Welcome to Archae-Facts, the place to find bite-sized chunks of Archaeological Trivia! Today we hear about the advanced ophthalmic surgery of Rome.
arrgh. I'm horrified by medical techniques and instruments of the first
half of the twentieth century. That's why all my time travel fantasies come
with return tickets. The more I learn about the past the happier I am to
have missed it. If you get hurt in a historical reenactment, it is time to
return to the 21st century, immediately.
I remember the 1950s & 60s and frankly I'd crawl naked over broken glass to
avoid going back even that far. The only trip I'd take is into the future,
so long as there was civilization. The past isn't just a foreign country,
it's another world and a very unpleasant one.
I want a machine to travel to the future. At least, it cannot cause
paradoxes. Sure, I might come back to a planet so polluted that it will be
totally impossible to live on, but then again, I'd come back for our
Gravity Age.
When one says that the greeks/romans had advanced medical knowledge, one
only compares them to the helath "professionals" of the dark and middle
ages, all the way up to the enlightenment, more or less
