I am a liberal and was certainly anti-Perot/Stockdale. Yet what many other
commenters have pointed out warrants repeating: For a summary of Vice
Admiral Stockdale's heroism, read his Wikipedia profile. For detailed
information on that subject and to glimpse his brilliance (albeit in a
non-academic context) read his spell-binding book (a collectiion of
speeches and essays) "THOUGHTS OF A PHILOSOPHICAL FIGHTER PILOT." Value his
hard-earned insights on history, philosophy, and leadership.
@ITILII Indeed. Stockdale had a most unfortunate quality that unofficially
excluded him from ever being elected a public official: he was a vertebrae.
And, he would never tell a lie to the American people, even if it meant
spending the rest of his life as a POW in Hanoi. I love the fact Stockdale
was drafted by Perot to be VP. I think anybody who puts themseleves up for
elected office should be automatically disqualified. They seriously sicken
me. I never look forward to voting.
These ex-military guys are all like this... they are obsessed with their
time in the military, and they try obsessively to make everything else in
their lives and in the world fit into that box as if it must be the most
significant thing to everyone else as well. They do this (1) because they
did not have or seek any significant experiences before or after that, and
because (2) fundamentally they are not very interesting, intellligent or
curious people to begin with.
@iVenge Stop hatin' on my man James Stockdale! In a debate, a politician is
going to stress their political record. A businessman is going to stress
his business record. And, in due course, a military man is going to stress
his military record. Have you read anything about James Stockdale? The
torture he went through? His determination? Or even anything he did after
Vietnam?
@rick9565 um, you realize congress raises taxes not a president, he made an
agreement with ht edmocratic congress not to veto their tax hike in
exchange for spending caps to reign in the budget. THAT was the catalytic
change that led to a balance budget in the late 1990s after a Republican
congress implemented even more spending reform.
@sportstuber11 Actually I' was just paraphrasing. I'm off by 1 percentage
point. 97%. I would love to post some sources here, but Youtube doesn't
allow hyperlinks or any web address in their comments section. Skeptical
Science dot com has a section on their website pointing to evidence of the
consensus in the scientific community.
@sirpsychosexay Clinton benefitted from the onset of the internet, AND from
Bush Sr. using the RTC to clean up the Savings & Loan crisis, the opposite
of the bailouts we see today. Bailing out the S&L's was unthinkable back
then. Our refusal to bail them out led to the great economy of which you
speak.
I despise this video........None of you pukes deserves to listen to a man
in his decreped state give a speech about America, when he was tortured to
no end....This man tortured himself to save lives....who would do that for
their fucking parents? Not any of these fucking current american fags.......
Looking back now, I think it's kind of a shame that Dan Quayle didn't run
for president after Bill Clinton was done. First off, he never could have
beaten Gore (not that Bush did; that election was stolen), and second, even
if he had, he could hardly have done worse than Bush.
@argentozombi That's a lie! Gore is the one who cheated and screwd it up
for 35 days after Election Day. Gore did not win! In fact, I have the
OFFICIAL number of votes for each candidate in Florida: Gore 2,912,253 and
Bush 2,912,790 So, Bush won Florida by 537 votes!
I'm not American. But I feel for your embarrassment. It sucked then, as it
does now. This is the sort of thing that true democracy leads to. Let's
face it, democracy limits progress ......but for now it is needed until a
real crisis sweeps it away.
I remember really looking forward to this 3 way debate. Was Fun! Felt bad
for Adm Stockdale. A true American hero who was thrust into these kind of
things. It was an honrable but poor choice campaign wise for Perot to make.
Not in the media age....
@ILovestorms Horray for for democracy! If a candidate wins more votes, he
should be elected. Bush had less votes. 'If he were a honest man respecting
democrary he would have congratulated Al Gore to be president. Only
Problem: that takes a man.
@MechTimber That's what I was thinking!! Word for word. There is not a
single contemporary reference in this video, and the only chronological
identifier is Viet Nam. Everything else: CHANGE! Health Insurance! and on
and on is identical!
@TenderTrap86 Stockdale was 1000 times the man that both I invented the
internet, climate change Gore, and mr. potatoe head, Quayle was...Adm.
Stockdale a REAL man, patriot and American, puts the blockhead Quayle and
slick Al to shame
Funny how virtually none of the things Quayle claimed would happen if
Clinton were president actually DID. Most importantly, we didn't lose the
jobs he claimed we would lose. GOP lacking credibility? Some things never
change.
Well to be fair Joe Biden ran for re-election for Senate in 08' as well as
being the VP Candidate. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that this should
be allowed. Politicians should be forced to pick one or the other, not both.
WOW. I like how pretty much everything that Quayle said about Clinton was
false in his opening statement, "He will make things worse." "he's not fit
to be president." The economy was outstanding under Clinton.
Quayle goes with the easy layup...they'll raise your taxes...be afraid. He
didn't mention that his boss Bush 41 did just that, raised taxes. The old
listen to what I'm saying, and don't look at what we did.
I blame Ross Perot for this. Admiral Stockdale was a true american hero and
would have made a wonderful military or security advisor, but V.P in the
age of media, debates and B.S grind was too much imo.
5:40 He ended up being so dead wrong it's hilarious. The only thing that
would have made it more ironic is if Al Gore had said "Bill Clinton will
never have sexual relations with that woman."
@bwc3821 exception Bill Clintons plan was taken from the Republican plan
when they took over congress and he had no over option except to move to
the right to become a 2nd term Prez.
@sportstuber11 That's funny. Because there's like 98% of the scientific
community standing behind the Global Warming theory, and every data
statistic chart supports the theory.
He's a midwestern GOP hack thats been in Washington DC way too long. I just
wish he would withdraw from his House election, but he knew he would need
it again after November
Quale did not apply for a VP job. He did ot even mentione that he runs. No
wonder everybody thinks he failed. He himself did not present himself as
the best candidate.
Liars... Direct quote from George HW Bush, "No new taxes" Completely false,
and Dan Quayle didn't get away with the trust line, we all already knew
bush was a liar...
Poor Stockdale. He had nothing on his opponents. If Quayle talked like the
way he was talking in this debate, he might have been more respected as the
VP.
I have done research into Obama's ass to know that the son of a bitch cant
be trusted. Every time he gets a position, he abandons it for a bigger
chair? 130+ votes present cause he didn't do his homework on the bills? Bad
connections to seedy people, As a sen of IL, he said he'd cut taxes on the
middle class but when he got there he raised them? Most Liberal voting
record in the senate? Is oblivious to how to deal with dictators? Cant
admit when he's wrong and apologize? That's the facts, jack.
Gosh, there's 2 much 2 write. I do recall in the VP debate he totally
nailed (ahead of time) that Clintons tax increases would hit $36,000+ a
year, not just 200k he claimed it would. Much more...just the media got on
him & would never report all he did as a Sen. & VP (& prior he was a
millonaire. U dont become those 3 things being stupid). Obama said he was
in 54 states, Al Gore didnt know a bust of Geo. Washington & ETC! Just the
media lets THOSE slide.& Secret service said Dan was super nice!
Rbolt, change your name to Robot, or Tool. You dumbasses are so stupid not
to even research the records of the candidates on your own instead of
listening to the news every day, and regardless of his wrong doing & giving
that bastard a pass because he's the flavor of the month!? You guys dont
realize what kind of fuck your trying to put in charge of this nation! You
think shit's bad now? Vote in that liar and watch the nation tumble down
the shitter. Listen to Hillary about that Son of a bitch!
What is amazing is that Quayle had to be asked this question 3 times before
he even began to address it. There is a difference between the question
"What would you do, as Vice-President, if the President were killed and you
became President?" vs. "How are you qualified to be president"? Those are
two ENTIRELY SEPARATE questions. Quayle was obviously unprepared to answer
the first (amazingly, in a VP debate!!!) so he chose to answer the 2nd
instead (he prepared for that one but still fumbled).
I could go on and on and on about why the motherfucker doesn't deserve the
big chair, but lets see you prove me wrong on those facts that i handed you
right there! Not to mention his IL push for Gun bans, BLATANTLY AGAINST our
2nd amendment right to bear arms. I find it funny that with such little
experience, he takes a lot of the same stances as McCain, for someone
calling John "McSame". Obama needs a Mirror! He'll say everything you want
to hear just so he can be the first Black President.
Yeah and you democrats keep injecting politics into the classroom! Not to
mention trying to steal the election with this ACORN SCANDAL. 13 states?!
As if there wasn't enough people voting for Obama they have to cheat?!
Whats more, is EVERYONE should be pissed about it! Private Organizations
are trying to circumvent our most precious right, and you assholes think
it's OK cause it's backing Obama?! Your the nutjob backing a corrupt
politician that talks of change but hasn't delivered ANYTHING!
Now I normally don't answer arse's but because you said "I don't know a
**ddamned thing" I suggest you pick up a book, a magazine, anything and
read, or wait YOU READ ALL OF THEM RIGHT?? People like you who rant and
rave (and curse an awful lot) about others opinion will surely make the
fist amendment evanescent. That's it anymore comments by you will be
ignored, I don't have time to go back and forh like a little sissy, since
I'll be doing so much Jiving, I am a jiving A's Love to dance!!!
Or the sheer bullshit coming out of your mouth to try and turn my words
against me. I am an adult. a responsible one at that, and i own guns (Yes
more than one) and most people that own one also own more than one. As for
my so-called lack of education, i laugh at you. You dont know me at all and
when you try to characterize me, you only show your failure to understand
what exactly it is that i am talking about. You should think outside that
box that those idiots in society have put you in.
Shut up, Jive ass. Your just another Obama Dick Sucker, and you fucking
fools dont know a goddamned thing about him because your living in a
fucking fantasy world like he's going to personally deliver us all unto
heaven and save our rosie asses, when in REALITY, he wants a Socialist
America, Has ties to terrorists, America Haters, Criminals in the Chicago
Underworld, Acorn, Fannie Mae and Freddie mac, George Sorros, Sol Alinski.
GO LOOK at his record before you get voters remorse, Moron!
Since no comparison was made beyond congressional experience, Bentsen
twisted an accurate statement solely for the purpose of a personal assault
on Quayle. In reality, one could argue Kennedy, a war monger who lied about
missle gap to gain the White House, expanded the cold war, created
circumstances leading to Cuban Missile Crisis, and repeatedly increased
Vietnam troop numbers, was very much like Bush/Quayle. If Bentson didn't
know this, he clearly knew nothing about Kennedy.
It's hard to determine who is more stupid between Palin and Quayle, I'd
have to go with Palin, why? Dan could probably name a few newspapers and
supreme court rulings, if Mccain wins it will be a dark dark day for
America, far darker than when Bush Sr. entered office. And Bicen, for the
record Palin did a terrible job, I was flabbergasted to see her smiling
idiotic face shout out 3rd graders on national television. And honestly,
Biden's goofy grins? are you kidding me?
Lloyd Bentsen was a three-term senator from Texas at the time he was
selected to be Dukakis' running mate in '88. He was brought on to "balance"
the ticket: Dukakis being a northeastern liberal, and Bentsen, a southerner
with more conservative views. Bentsen was a very respected member of the
Senate, and many believe should have headed the ticket. He briefly served
as Clinton's Treasury Secretary before retiring from public service. He
died in 2006 at age 85.
McCain met Palin just Once before her nominated her for VP. People put more
thought into who they want to go to the movies with than McCain put into
who is potentially 2nd in charge of this country, and potentially Commander
in Chief considering McCain has had 4 bouts with cancer. She is a total
stranger to the entire country with the exception of 600k Alaskans. And he
says People First. Special Interest First its clear to most everyone.
Id like to know why children are dying everyday in the city from guns. To
everything, there is a time and place. Everyone clearly shouldn't have the
right to bear arms. Do we let kids have them? Do we let mental patients
have them? What about school teachers? Your attempt to make this a cut or
dry issue about the 2nd Amendment clearly shows your lack of understanding
of the more complex issues that take place outside of the woods.....
I thought JFK was good for the USA in 1960. His brother RFK is my hero and
there brother Edward did more for the country then both of them. BUT Dan
Quayle was right when he said he had more experienced then JFK in congress.
JFK took the seat then hardly went there. Same with RFK, he won the seat
from New York only to try to be president. in 1968. Ted Kennendy is the
only brother that served the American people long term.
McCain doesn't think much of the Vice Presidency. He said before that it's
for attending funerals and checking on the president's health. He was
joking, of course, but he really doesn't think too highly of the position.
That may explain some why he picked someone for show horse purposes. Palin
has things going for her, but she would not be making real decisions or
policy at all. Not like say Gore or Cheney.
@schusterlehrling Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the other minor outlying islands
of the united states are just that, territories. They are not states. They
are by no means states and by no stretch of the imagination or molestation
of the dictionary can they be called such. Even if somehow we could call
them states, Quayle and H.W. didn't campaign in any of them. Seems like he
is not quite as smart as you thought.
I'm a Republican and i honestly do NOT know how this idiot Quayle EVER got
elected to congress, unless his democratic rival was stupider than he was,
Or why the hell Bush 41 selected this idiot as his running mate. Oh Georgie
Boy, was this guy really the best you had to choose from? Seriously?! I
mean come on! Gore was a moron too but compared to Quayle, Gore was a
rocket scientist!
He had an amazing speaking style. He was like a kindergarten teacher who's
forgotten what subject he was on. It's like he could only see 2 or 3 words
into the future of whatever sentence he was saying, and was just blundering
forward like a detective slowly piecing together what he was trying to say.
Sort of an "I'll know where it is when I get there" philosophy.
Please, Sarah Palin made Dan Quayle look like Albert Einstein. Quayle said
a lot of stupid things, but at least his party didn't ban him from doing
interviews during the election. Plus, he at least seems to be making a
serious effort here instead of just trying to come off as cute with idiotic
phrases like "you betcha" and golly gee."
Ok, I've heard of Dan Qualye, but who the hell is this "Lloyd Bentson"
character????? Never heard of him. He had a nice line here, but where did
it get him??? I never heard of him?? Typical loser democrat.....*sigh* when
we learn not to run losers for office...like Obama*** sigh
All politicians occasionally slip up, but Quayle got more heat for it
because it was quite frequent with him, And, of course he was intelligent.
You don't become a US Senator without being that, but politics is all about
image, which Quayle wasn't able to maintain.
yup, and i'm sure you realize there was a dumbass republican president for
8 years, and then a slightly less dumb presidential candidate, and an the
even more idiotic vice presidential candidate that he selected. tell me,
why are you still a republican?
WHat a rude old man. Quayle was SOOO much smarter then the heatless media
made him out to be. And mindless idiot robots jumped on the viscious &
untrue bandwagon Obama said he campaigned in 54 states. Dont see the media
on him in the least.
I agree that Quayle showed his remarkable genius by setting the old fart
from Texas up like that ... exposing him for being the utter classless
jackass that he was! Dan Quayle set the Gold Standard for debates by
pulling this one off!
Dan Quayle was exposed for the complete moron he was. And for those who
think that Llyod was over the top...."If you cant take the heat, get out of
the kitchen". Those who think Dan "won" this debate are obviously
Republicans.
@aquaiz He did, as Samoa and Puerto Rico and other "territories" also count
for the Democratic nomination. So he ACTUALLY campigned in more then 50
states. Seems like he is smarter then you thought.
If Palin decides to run in 2012 there is no way she would make it past the
primaries, and if she does get the nomination, than the Republicans are
handing Obama his second term on a silver platter.
That because Obama had campaigned in some state more than once, which is
what he meant be 57 states, he just worded it poorly. Besides, that one
slipup, compared to countless slipups from quayle.
1988 - Famous Exchange Between Lloyd Bentsen & Dan Quayle at VP Debate
"Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" is still widely quoted, years after this took place on October 5, 1988. This is the complete exchange.
Excerpt from Vice Presidential Debate in 1988 between Lloyd Bentsen and Dan Quayle
Lloyd Bentsen Delivers "You are No Jack Kennedy" response to Dan Quayle during the 1988 Vice Presidential Debate. Excerpt from Modern Presidential ...
Yeah...you are no Jack Kennedy. Thank God...you didn't sleep around-you
didn't cheat on your wife. Good morals there. Kennedy spent his 35 months
in the White House stumbling from crisis to fiasco. He came into office and
okayed the Bay of Pigs invasion. Then he went to a Vienna summit conference
and got his clock cleaned by Khrushchev. That led to, among other things,
the Cuban missile crisis and a whiff of nuclear apocalypse.
1988: VP Candidates Debate Global Warming
//climatesilence.org 1988 was the first year climate change was raised at the presidential debates, in the vice-presidential debate between Lloyd Bentsen ...
We really can't, unfortunately. All we can do is develop alternative
sources of energy so we can ween ourselves off fossil fuels. Whatever we
and China do, however, the next 50-100 years are going to be very
interesting...
Dan Quayle and Al Gore argue about a passage in Gore's book. According to the book "Quest for the Presidency - 1992," Quayle's wife Marilyn suggested the ...
@sportstuber11 Global temperature has not risen so dramatically or suddenly
in over half a million years. Are you telling me that it's just a
coincidence that this is happening just when carbon emissions are at their
highest? And P.s. I do understand cap and trade, and it makes sense. If you
use less enviromentally harmful pollutants, you pay less. The goverment's
not trying to control the amount of energy we use, it's controling the how
we get that energy, and making sure it's clean and safe.
Ah yes it's amazing that people like you do not know how much money it will
take to get these environmental projects going. Like how it happened in
California, 1000s of people out of work billions of our tax dollars in this
state somehow shot through our asses and payed to get these projects going.
It'll also cost trillions of dollars to put up solar panels in the desert
and think of how much it will cost to clean them. And it'll probably take a
couple of decades to find alternative resources
@ryansohot My post is perhaps poorly written. The cost for the US, Europe,
and Japan COMBINED would be $100 billion. Europe and Japan would be footing
a significant portion of this in Gore's plan--the cost to the US would be
much, much lower than $100 billion. Going by 1992 GDP, the US would be less
than half. (Japan+Germany+Franch alone surpassed US GDP in 1992--add in the
UK and the many smaller European economies and we're significantly below
50%.
@rick9565 Yeah, but that's 100 billion dollars in the 1980s, when Al wrote
the book, before the effect of inflation. I think the foolishness of
spending 100 billion dollars on fictitious "green" energy production, and
100 billion dollars on an invasion to prevent weapons of mass destruction
that didn't even exist, and 100 billion dollars to bail out bankers for a
fictitious economy and reckless speculation is all cut from the same cloth.
Quayle "pulled a Bill Clinton" out of his ass. On page 304: "Charles Maier
points out that the annual U.S. expenditures for the Marshall Plan between
1948 and 1951 were close to 2 % of our GNP. A similar percentage today
would be almost $100 billion a year" Nowhere did Gore write that $100
billion should be spent in foreign countries. It's just a comparison to
illustrate what the Marshall Plan would have meant in 1990
@classic14rider Here's the problem with Al Gore in this video, again same
problem he had in 2000, he can't ever shut his fucking motor of a mouth.
Gore doesn't know when to shut up, he wants to be right and when someone
attacks him he is just going to piss and moan because he thinks he is
always right. That's what Gore's problem is, look at his reaction in this
debate.
@sportstuber11 How could you possibly think global warming is a lie? You
only have to look at the world to see that the climate is changing,
rapidly, extremely and not for the better. The increse of hurricanes, the
rise of world temperature, the melting of the polar ice caps, it's all
there staring you in the face. Deny it all you want, that doesn't mean it's
not real.
Pull a Bill Clinton? You're pulling a George W Bush by falsly accusing him.
Quayle is such an idiot. Al gore would have been a great President and it's
a damn shame that George W Bush got in and destroyed the economy. I hope
the people who voted for GW Bush are proud of themselves for voting for
that clown. The majority of them probably regret it now.
Disagree! The deciding moment was Gore saying READ MY LIPS! That was the
stake in the heart for the Republicans I was really for Perot at this time
but Stockdale blew all chances for Perot. As well as Perot stepping down,
then coming back just to step down again? But wait!?!? He's coming back...
EL POOPA! OR GET OFFA DA POTTA!!!
Ah, Quayle's lies. Pg. 304 proposes that the United States should try to
enlist Europe and Japan in a Marshall Plan-like effort to protect the
environment, and that IF the United States made a commitment equivalent to
ours under the Marshall Plan, the cost would come to $100 billion.
Like it or not, Quayle was actually an asset in 92. Those four years were
school for him, yeah, sure, he wasn't ready in 88. But he was loaded for
bear in 92. A far better performance than Bush turned in against Clinton
that year. Gah, I still remember Bush looking at his watch. . .
I didn't edit the clip, but if I had, I would have included Gore's
response. I think whoever originally edited this wanted to convey the idea
that Quayle was feistier and less of a "deer in the headlights" than he was
in '88, which was one of the media narratives after the debate.
@catclaw357 Dude studying American Politics is part of my education. Also,
you did not spell "you're" correctly. You spelled it like this "your". Now,
I was exaggerating when I said that all politians are liars. Maybe I should
have said that most politians are liars.
Quayle was not the sharpest of tacks. But as a sitting VP, gotta hand it to
him that he sniffed out some bullcrap, exposing the scam artist Al Gore a
very long time ago. Behind the scenes, Al Gore is doing it today. More
enviornmentalism, less jobs, less economy.
Let's see, who would know better what was in Al Gore's book... Al Gore, who
WROTE the book in question... Or Dan Quayle, who never even READ a book!
Not even the one he "wrote"! The sad part is, Quayle was probably smarter
than Dubya. And Palin.
Dan Quayle was by far one of the worst Vice Presidents of all time. He
compared himself to JFK before incorrectly correcting the word "potato" as
"potatoe" when an elementary school student knew how to spell it at a
spelling bee!
@jazmundln Actually, he was merely reading off a card written by the
teacher (indicating that he can read), and FWIW, the 'correction' he
offered was in fact a correct spelling. We can surely find honest ways to
criticize Quayle.
@catclaw357 I'm in college to become a high school teacher who teaches
American History. I am very familier with American politics. Thank you very
much! Also, you spelled "you're" wrong, so back off!
We saw it come to pass.....NAFTDA. Doesn't mean I like either of these
dildos. Enough Republicans and enough Democrats...NEITHER help Americans
anymore, yeah they'll throw us a bone.
@catclaw357 And Gore was honest? Get real. All politians are liars. You can
tell they're lying when their lips are moving. Both Republicans and
Democrats suck. Enough said.
As badly as Quayle did in 88, he killed during this debate. I loved it when
he told Gore to calm down and "inhale" during a heated exchange (not in
this video).
@classic14rider "..the cost in lost jobs and a lower standard of living."
Are you talking about global warming and environmental pollution and their
results?|
