I am a liberal and was certainly anti-Perot/Stockdale. Yet what many other
commenters have pointed out warrants repeating: For a summary of Vice
Admiral Stockdale's heroism, read his Wikipedia profile. For detailed
information on that subject and to glimpse his brilliance (albeit in a
non-academic context) read his spell-binding book (a collectiion of
speeches and essays) "THOUGHTS OF A PHILOSOPHICAL FIGHTER PILOT." Value his
hard-earned insights on history, philosophy, and leadership.

@ITILII Indeed. Stockdale had a most unfortunate quality that unofficially
excluded him from ever being elected a public official: he was a vertebrae.
And, he would never tell a lie to the American people, even if it meant
spending the rest of his life as a POW in Hanoi. I love the fact Stockdale
was drafted by Perot to be VP. I think anybody who puts themseleves up for
elected office should be automatically disqualified. They seriously sicken
me. I never look forward to voting.

These ex-military guys are all like this... they are obsessed with their
time in the military, and they try obsessively to make everything else in
their lives and in the world fit into that box as if it must be the most
significant thing to everyone else as well. They do this (1) because they
did not have or seek any significant experiences before or after that, and
because (2) fundamentally they are not very interesting, intellligent or
curious people to begin with.

@rick9565 um, you realize congress raises taxes not a president, he made an
agreement with ht edmocratic congress not to veto their tax hike in
exchange for spending caps to reign in the budget. THAT was the catalytic
change that led to a balance budget in the late 1990s after a Republican
congress implemented even more spending reform.

Bush Sr. using the RTC to clean up the Savings & Loan crisis, the opposite
of the bailouts we see today. Bailing out the S&L's was unthinkable back

Looking back now, I think it's kind of a shame that Dan Quayle didn't run
for president after Bill Clinton was done. First off, he never could have
beaten Gore (not that Bush did; that election was stolen), and second, even
if he had, he could hardly have done worse than Bush.

OFFICIAL number of votes for each candidate in Florida: Gore 2,912,253 and

I remember really looking forward to this 3 way debate. Was Fun! Felt bad
for Adm Stockdale. A true American hero who was thrust into these kind of
things. It was an honrable but poor choice campaign wise for Perot to make.

nailed (ahead of time) that Clintons tax increases would hit $36,000+ a
year, not just 200k he claimed it would. Much more...just the media got on
him & would never report all he did as a Sen. & VP (& prior he was a

What is amazing is that Quayle had to be asked this question 3 times before
he even began to address it. There is a difference between the question
"What would you do, as Vice-President, if the President were killed and you
became President?" vs. "How are you qualified to be president"? Those are
two ENTIRELY SEPARATE questions. Quayle was obviously unprepared to answer
the first (amazingly, in a VP debate!!!) so he chose to answer the 2nd
instead (he prepared for that one but still fumbled).

Since no comparison was made beyond congressional experience, Bentsen
twisted an accurate statement solely for the purpose of a personal assault
on Quayle. In reality, one could argue Kennedy, a war monger who lied about
missle gap to gain the White House, expanded the cold war, created
circumstances leading to Cuban Missile Crisis, and repeatedly increased
Vietnam troop numbers, was very much like Bush/Quayle. If Bentson didn't
know this, he clearly knew nothing about Kennedy.

Lloyd Bentsen was a three-term senator from Texas at the time he was
selected to be Dukakis' running mate in '88. He was brought on to "balance"
the ticket: Dukakis being a northeastern liberal, and Bentsen, a southerner
with more conservative views. Bentsen was a very respected member of the
Senate, and many believe should have headed the ticket. He briefly served
as Clinton's Treasury Secretary before retiring from public service. He
died in 2006 at age 85.

I thought JFK was good for the USA in 1960. His brother RFK is my hero and
there brother Edward did more for the country then both of them. BUT Dan
Quayle was right when he said he had more experienced then JFK in congress.
JFK took the seat then hardly went there. Same with RFK, he won the seat

McCain doesn't think much of the Vice Presidency. He said before that it's
for attending funerals and checking on the president's health. He was
joking, of course, but he really doesn't think too highly of the position.
That may explain some why he picked someone for show horse purposes. Palin

in over half a million years. Are you telling me that it's just a
coincidence that this is happening just when carbon emissions are at their
highest? And P.s. I do understand cap and trade, and it makes sense. If you
use less enviromentally harmful pollutants, you pay less. The goverment's
not trying to control the amount of energy we use, it's controling the how

take to get these environmental projects going. Like how it happened in
California, 1000s of people out of work billions of our tax dollars in this
state somehow shot through our asses and payed to get these projects going.
It'll also cost trillions of dollars to put up solar panels in the desert
and think of how much it will cost to clean them. And it'll probably take a

and Japan COMBINED would be $100 billion. Europe and Japan would be footing
a significant portion of this in Gore's plan--the cost to the US would be
much, much lower than $100 billion. Going by 1992 GDP, the US would be less
than half. (Japan+Germany+Franch alone surpassed US GDP in 1992--add in the
UK and the many smaller European economies and we're significantly below
50%.

spending 100 billion dollars on fictitious "green" energy production, and

Quayle "pulled a Bill Clinton" out of his ass. On page 304: "Charles Maier
points out that the annual U.S. expenditures for the Marshall Plan between
1948 and 1951 were close to 2 % of our GNP. A similar percentage today
would be almost $100 billion a year" Nowhere did Gore write that $100
billion should be spent in foreign countries. It's just a comparison to
illustrate what the Marshall Plan would have meant in 1990

Quayle is such an idiot. Al gore would have been a great President and it's
a damn shame that George W Bush got in and destroyed the economy. I hope
the people who voted for GW Bush are proud of themselves for voting for
that clown. The majority of them probably regret it now.

Disagree! The deciding moment was Gore saying READ MY LIPS! That was the
stake in the heart for the Republicans I was really for Perot at this time
but Stockdale blew all chances for Perot. As well as Perot stepping down,
then coming back just to step down again? But wait!?!? He's coming back...

Ah, Quayle's lies. Pg. 304 proposes that the United States should try to
enlist Europe and Japan in a Marshall Plan-like effort to protect the
environment, and that IF the United States made a commitment equivalent to
ours under the Marshall Plan, the cost would come to $100 billion.

Like it or not, Quayle was actually an asset in 92. Those four years were
school for him, yeah, sure, he wasn't ready in 88. But he was loaded for
bear in 92. A far better performance than Bush turned in against Clinton
that year. Gah, I still remember Bush looking at his watch. . .

I didn't edit the clip, but if I had, I would have included Gore's
response. I think whoever originally edited this wanted to convey the idea
that Quayle was feistier and less of a "deer in the headlights" than he was
in '88, which was one of the media narratives after the debate.

Quayle was not the sharpest of tacks. But as a sitting VP, gotta hand it to
him that he sniffed out some bullcrap, exposing the scam artist Al Gore a
very long time ago. Behind the scenes, Al Gore is doing it today. More
enviornmentalism, less jobs, less economy.

Dan Quayle was by far one of the worst Vice Presidents of all time. He
compared himself to JFK before incorrectly correcting the word "potato" as
"potatoe" when an elementary school student knew how to spell it at a
spelling bee!

@jazmundln Actually, he was merely reading off a card written by the
teacher (indicating that he can read), and FWIW, the 'correction' he
offered was in fact a correct spelling. We can surely find honest ways to
criticize Quayle.

As badly as Quayle did in 88, he killed during this debate. I loved it when
he told Gore to calm down and "inhale" during a heated exchange (not in

I watched this debate when it first aired. I thought Gore got the better of
Quayle. Clinton-Gore beat Bush-Quayle less than a month after this.

Funny, the fact that not only was what Dan Quayle said completely
incorrect, but the clip cuts off before Gore's response.
