+alain belanger You realise Mercedes are upgrading their engine as well don't you? It's not like Ferrari have the exclusive right to upgrade their engines... We don't know how much more performance Mercedes has because they spend all over the holidays improving reliability. So I would expect to see massive performance gains when they bring their engine updates to the car soon. Also, keep in mind Lewis and I think Nico as well have both only used ONE engine so far, and will probably wait until Canada to use only their second engine. That is incredible reliability and a HUGE advantage as not only can they use more engines with the upgrades, come end of season when everyone is taking penalties, they may be able to run brand new faultless engines while everyone else is on bits 5 or 6 or even 7 and 8 in Renaults situation.

Santander, voted Worst Bank in Europe. Santander, recently found guilty of stealing active military vehicles, selling them and then sticking the service people with a bogus bill! It truly is reprehensible that people like you simply look the other way. Fur are-E, the supposedly most important team in the circus. No mention of how they get the money to race. Shame you two lack the fortitude to make mention of the facts of the situation.

+SmOgER Lol. And all those people working the coal mines getting black lung so coal power plants can generate the power needed to smelt aluminum needed to build these cars? I think we should burn our houses down and wear potato sacks just to make sure we aren't supporting any illegal activity and be sure nobody gets exploited.

+Stev Rex What about then Merc's sponsor Monster Energy and its ties to "illuminati"? lol. That logo alone is a 666 in Hebrew.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2IuqPH2VwWM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABI/B0eSGGoANQg/photo.jpg?sz=64
Don't forget all the people that die from their main sponsor...a cigarette company. That means ferrari is killing people right?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--RI0mcBrOJI/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAACY/JP_O9iPqlv0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Stev Rex Let's leave politics to other people. What a sponsor does or doesn't do has nothing to do with what happens in F1 unless the cash flow drastically changes. I'm here for in depth technical discussions and racing.

70% new body work and still 1s behind merc means one thing, the mercs have been sandbagging since Australia. Coupled with Williams sudden increase in pace all but confirms this.

+ianivaFair enough.  Lets see how things go.  10 bucks on lewis this weekend.

+Bahamuttiamat What those things confirm is that Spain was a weird weekend in terms of track conditions. Also, Ferrari didn't maximize the update package. Future races will give us a better idea of where things stand.

+Efrain Parada Mercedes have developed their power-unit over the winter, that is without doubt. The sound alone suggests that. I believe they focused more on the ERS side of things. It seems to be much reliable and consistent whilst also recovering the maximum amount of energy possible, compared to others teams. Their chassis was a major benefit in the first place, since 2014. Mercedes have only evolved and have fined tuned the beast of a car they produced last year Aerodynamically. Only this year, Ferrari have risen their game, in all factors and fair and square are they only real competitors to their constructors Championship. As we all saw in Malaysia, Ferrari looked after their tires better than Mercedes. If it weren't for the tire wear and extreme temperatures, Malaysia would have been a Mercedes 1 & 2 without a doubt...

I dont think merc has been sandbagging at all, in fact they actually haven't changed much this year. The only new thing they have added is the front wing, other than that it's minor aero stuff. Goes to show how far ahead they really were. As for Williams, they figured, hell we were doing good last year why not just use the same car as last year. Other than the nose, by way of the regulations, their car is literally the same as last year's. No really. Unless they find out how to get more downforce, we can expect to be fast on straights and in third.

+AnarchistMetalhead As it stands, f1 is the pinnacle of entertainment.  Honestly, most reality shows got shit on f1.  I mean, the sheer levels of politics, lies, conspiracies and hidden agendas makes this the greatest sport ever!!  Been following f1 since 2010 cause of lewis but the show is soooo engrossing. You simply never know what'll happen in f1 and im not talking about the racing.

+Bahamuttiamat obviously, what else could they do when the rest of the grid complains about the unequal results and wants to force another major regulation change?the only thing to make those claims look ridiculous is having a close challenger right at the start of the season.the less the regulations change the less mercedes has to invest in staying ahead, easily multiple hundred million in difference between a changed engine format and the now discussed 2017 changes

i wonder if Monaco will be the best chance for McLaren Honda to score points this season, seeing how engine performance is less critical than downforce?

+chris howarth Completely agree with you. I was just making an observation about aero not being a critical factor for a competitive pace in Monaco. I just meant that compare Japan (Suzuka) aero importance to Monaco :) Would it be fair to say Red Bull might come the field more this weekend? I know driveabiltiy from the Renault Power-unit is horrendous, but Red Bull have always had a great chassis. Surely that would give the drivers major confidence? I would personally like to see Daniel Ricciardo getting some excellent races results again, like last year. I just don't think it is possible this year, especially with the power-unit penalties for him. Also, what do you think about this Ferrari vs Mercedes battle? Do Ferrari really have a chance this year? :)

I'd have to agree with the comment about driveability. I do hope that McLaren have a good race, as I love that team. However, as Jenson was describing I think last race, they don't have the driveability from that power unit yet. He described it as scary due to the on off power delivery. Again, I hope they can sneak into the point and finish strong, but I'm worried about those comments he made

+SuperItalia494 I think the aero and engine has more impact than you think. Engine because driveability is important this year, and monaco is a very twisty circuit, no they need confidence in the car when putting down the power. The aero is important not because of the drag/downforce, but instead to how nice the car is to drive and how close to the limit they can bring the car. So the drivers talent is critical, but a car that is easier and predictable to drive will allow the driver to unleash more of his raw talent. Some cars are better in this regard as others. Red-bull have terrible driveability and i'd expect them to do pretty bad. Mclaren on the other hand, according to the drivers, the car is very nice to drive and can they bring the car close to the limit, so expect them to hopefully get into Q3.

+Edward Hunter I personally think it's more to do with driver capability than anything... The cars don't really go as fast around Monaco to produce the maximum amount of downforce. So, we know for a start, engine performance is not a priority. We also know downforce is only generated due to to speed of the car throughout a corner. Monaco does not primarily focus on either on these factors, therefore (I believe), the overall pace difference will be determined by driver skill. However, braking, traction and mechanical grip are also key factors to provide competitive pace around here... My bet is that Alonso and Button can really shine here :) But, don't count out Mercedes and Ferrari being the main competitors for a podium.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fbeDsaAHSCw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAHU/URgu7npL7i8/photo.jpg?sz=64
If you're McLaren right now it is critical because it's holding them back...I think there's a reason why Jenson thinks he can spring an upset at Monaco and not really anywhere else.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cmNGIHQAmxg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAJo/1AUDs_zKob0/photo.jpg?sz=64
Neither of these factors are "critical" there actually, it's just that they always try to add the most downforce-heavy setup they have available, because aero efficiency matters even less than outright downforce potential, just as Scarbs suggested in the video.Monaco is kind of special in many regards.
